The highly-esteemed les Fuees climat is essentially on the southwest border of the Bonnes Mares vineyard which is known for spicy and savory flavors as opposed to a more fruity profile. It lies mid-slope on the escarpment sharing the same elevation as its Grand Cru neighbor. Fuees from producers like Barthod and Mugnier typically run 5 times the price of Sigaut's CM Fuees, and in many vintages the quality is very comparable such as 2017 where Sigault did excellent work. As well, alcohols for this wine came in between 12.5 and 13% which we all love in any vintage.

Producer note: Hervé Sigaut, and his wife, Anne told me that 2017 "surprised us by how abundant the harvest was despite having aggressively dropped fruit. You can count bunches all you want but it's very difficult to estimate just how much juice the berries are going to give up. Sometimes there's quite a bit of pulp and other times there's more juice and 2017 was just one of those vintages. That said, it was frankly welcome after the 2016 vintage where we just got crushed. We picked from the 7th of September and brought in clean and ripe fruit where the yields ranged from 40 to 42 hl/ha, which is higher than the 35 or so that we shoot for but not truly excessive. Potential alcohols were good as they came between 12.5 and 13% and because the fruit was so clean and ripe, the vinifications basically finished themselves. There wasn't a lot of malic acidity so the malos terminated relatively early. We would describe the 2017s as pretty and fresh and while they're not great wines, they should provide a lot of pleasure. Moreover, for those who prefer younger wines, the '17s should drink very well in their youth."

Tasting note: An attractively, even exuberantly spicy nose offers up notes of violet, lavender, plum and more discreet wood influence. The medium-bodied flavors are rich to the point of possessing a velvety texture as there is good dry extract which contributes to the solid mid-palate density, all wrapped in a sappy and bitter cherry pit-inflected finish where the natural minerality of a typical Fuées emerges, Lovely.
