2019 Domaine Eugenie Offering

When Francois Pinault of Latour fame purchased the Rene Engel holdings in 2006, Domaine Eugenie was born - A Jewel in the Crown located in the Heart of the Cote de Nuits .

The Eugenie property has become very well known amongst Burgundy aficionados who are familiar with the Rene Engel wines. Recent prices of Engel's past noteworthy wines are jaw-dropping to say the least. The vineyards themselves are noteworthy as well. The Clos Eugenie monopole looks directly onto the La Tache vineyard across the street. Although the wines continue to rise in price every vintage, the 2019s still offer affordability at the lower end, and quality across the entire range.

11 new barrels in 14, 75% whole bunch. Another glowing imperial purple colour. The bouquet is less ecstatic, the wine in the mouth is magisterial. There is a huge intensity of flavour but this 2019 Clos Vougeot stays light on its feet, whole bunch present, but very much maintaining discretion. Very good tension at the finish. Red fruit with a touch of liquorice, this year the Clos Vougeot is challenging the brilliant Grands Echezeaux. Tasted: November 2020 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgund

Note: from a 1.37 ha parcel of 60+ year old vines situated close to the Château; 75% whole clusters

Tasting note: This too is deftly wooded with an ultra-floral-suffused nose that speaks primarily of both red and dark berries, newly turned earth and a hint of humus. There is excellent volume to the denser and muscular yet relatively refined broad-shouldered flavors that culminate in a youthfully austere, compact and gorgeously long finish. The supporting tannins are dense but admirably fine-grained and while the overall impression is not as classy as that of the Grands Echézeaux, there is a bit more here. Patience is strongly advised. Just the upper plot is retained for the 1er Cru bottling. 60% whole bunch. and three new barrels out of five. Fine mid purple, beautifully perfumed again, does not show the extra whole bunch because there is even more pure fruit. Little floral notes but in dark flowers. Ripely seductive, even a chocolate note, a good idea to have picked when they did. Tasted: November 2020 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy

Note: from a 1.16 ha parcel of 60+ year old vines; there are two sections, one upper and one lower and this cuvée now uses only the upper portion; 70% whole clusters

Tasting note: A markedly more restrained nose reluctantly offers up its notably spicy aromas of dark cherry, sandalwood and plenty of floral influences. Once again, the texture of the medium-bodied flavors is super-sleek with a taut muscularity that carries over to the mineral-driven, chiseled and compact finale. I very much like the balance though the firm tannic spine will need 12+ years to resolve. Worth a look. Outstanding - Allen Meadows - Burghound

2019 Eugenie Echezeaux Grand Cru

The holding slopes gently northwards and benefits from old vines – even the youngest are over 40 now. 70% whole bunch vinification and four new barrels in six. Glowing purple with a dark centre. Starts gently then the dark fruit absolutely races away. A little touch of sucrosity, good acidity, balanced and delightful. Very solid more than nuanced. But note that the malolactic fermentation as late here. Tasted: November 2020 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy

Note: from a .55 ha parcel in En Orveaux with vines planted in 1924 and 1979; 70% whole clusters

Tasting note: A discreet application of wood frames notes of soy, hoisin, star anise, black raspberry and plenty of floral nuances. There is impressive mid-palate density to the seductively textured larger-scaled flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract on the precise, very firm and serious finale where the impression of structure arrives just at the end. This markedly compact effort is clearly built-to-age and I would suggest not touching a bottle before 10 years of age. In a word, excellent.

Three new barrels in four and 70% whole bunch. Bright deep glowing purple. The bouquet is wonderful, a huge step up from Echezeaux. Early malolactic here, which helps a wine to show well in barrel. Glorious red flowers on the nose, royal peonies. This is sublime, a nice touch of oak behind, all well integrated, superb persistence. Gorgeous finish. In the presence of royalty. Tasted: November 2020 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy

Note: from a .50 ha parcel with vines that range from 20 to 60 years of age with the average being about 25 years old; 75% whole clusters

Tasting note: This too is aromatically quite reserved with its elegant and beautifully layered nose of red currant, plum, lavender, violet and an expansive panoply of spice elements. As is usually the case, there is a bit more size and weight to the big-bodied, powerful and muscular flavors that possess both terrific delineation and energy, all wrapped in a super-saline and hugely long finish where a touch of wood gradually emerges. This is a wine that could be enjoyed after only 5-ish or so years of cellaring while retaining the ability to generously recompense 15+. Allen Meadows - Burghound

Two new barrels in six and 40% whole bunch. Excellent fresh mid purple, the bouquet frankly is beautifully elegant, the percentage of stems just peeping above the parapet, harmonious across the palate, for a village wine this is magnificent. Dancing dark fruit, ripe, but balanced and exceptionally long. Tasted: November 2020 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy

Note: a monopole measuring .57 ha; 40% whole clusters

Tasting note: Here an expressive nose is spicier, and a bit more deeply pitched with its array of bright red and dark currant, floral and jasmine tea scents. The sleek and delicious medium weight flavors possess better volume on the precise, mildly austere and linear finish. This balanced effort is a quality Vosne villages and sufficiently structured to reward a decade plus of cellaring. Allen Meadows - Burghound

This comes from Les Vigneux, a small plot of Combe Brûlée, some declassified 1er cru Aux Brûlées and all the young vines from throughout the domaine. A little bit of Vigneux gets some whole bunch treatment but the total for the whole cuvée would be not much more than 10%. Fine mid purple, the fruit swelling on the bouquet, dark flowers, with an attractive sweetness of fruit on the palate. Quite heady but finishes fresh. 20% new wood. 13.5%. alcohol. Really long finish with a few liquorice notes. Delicious. Tasted: November 2020  Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy

Note: a blend of 1/3 Les Vigneux and 2/3 declassified fruit from the lower portion of the 1er Aux Brûlées

Tasting note: An agreeably fresh and cool nose reflects notes of mostly red berries, spice and violet. The delicious and energetic middle weight flavors possess a wonderfully refreshing salinity on the lingering finish that is shaped by very fine-grained tannins. This youthfully austere effort should repay 6 to 10 years of cellaring.
