Interesting Image

As the main chateaux start to come forward, one of our perennial favorites, Château Pichon Baron, have released "hands down one of the most impressive wines of 2020" with 97-98 points.

Another wine that was on many wish lists this year is the 98pt Calon Segur. The most northerly of all the Medoc Grand-Crus Classes, it produces one of the very best and age-worthy wines on the Left Bank. It is also known for having a heart on its label, the reason being the former owner, Marquis de Segur, owned a number of estates (including Lafite and Latour!) but he declared "My heart belongs to Calon."

Also not to be missed from the same team as Calon Segur is the 94-96pt  "hidden gem" by Capbern that we've slated as an Over-Achiever.

First out of the gates last season, Château Pontet-Canet have bided their time this year before releasing their highly anticipated 98-99pt 2020, and it's certainly worth the wait!

From Pessac Leognan, the ever-popular 97-99pt Pape Clement Rouge "ranking with the top wines of the vintage" plus a "delicious" 97-98pt Blanc have also been released.

Last but certainly not least we have a 96-98+ point Pomerol, the "powerhouse" 2020 from Clinet.

Don't miss this opportunity to secure your allocations at the opening prices.

We've updated our Futures Landing Page to list our Wines of the Vintage, Over-Achievers, and Value Drinkers, while it continues to be updated with new wines daily, and we'll be sending offers on the most compelling wines as they are released...stay tuned!

2020 Pichon Baron (Pauillac)

97-98 JS / 96-98 JD / 96-98 VM / 95-97 WA / 96 DE

The inky hued 2020 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron checks in as a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Merlot that spent 18 months in 70% new barrels. It's a dense, rich, powerful 2020 offering loads of pure cassis and almost blue fruits as well as full-bodied richness, a round, lush, incredibly sexy texture, sweet tannins, and ample classic Pauillac lead pencil, tobacco, and violet aromas and flavors. It's unquestionably in the same ballpark as the 2015, 2016, and 2018, and given its sweet tannins and beautifully integrated acidity, it should have some up-front appeal as well, yet still age at a glacier pace. - Jeb Dunnuck

2020 Calon Segur (Saint Estephe)

GVWM Over-Achiever

98 DE / 95-97+ WA / 95-97 JD / 95-96 JS / 92-94 VM

A return to form in my eyes for Calon Ségur after the atypical 2018, rippling with elegance, balance and savoury blue fruits of Cabernet, with rose and peony flowers. Concentrated, chiselled and juicy, this has clear personality and equals the great, classically balanced vintages of Calon like 2016. A yield of 33hl/ha, 3.85pH, 100% new oak. Vincent Millet is now overall director as well as technical director, since the departure of Laurent Dufau in 2020. - Jane Anson, Decanter

2020 Pontet Canet (Pauillac)
98-99 JS / 96-98+ WA / 97 DE / 95-97 VM

The 2020 Pontet-Canet is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, aging in 50% new French oak barriques, 35% concrete amphorae and 15% in one-year-old barrels. Harvest began on the 14th September for the Merlot, and the final lot of Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested on 30th September. Opaque purple-black in color, it needs significant aeration and swirling to coax out evocative notes of black cherry preserves, raspberry pie, blackcurrant pastilles and damp soil, before launching into gorgeous floral and spice notions of red roses, cinnamon stick, star anise and cardamom, with a waft of crushed rocks. The medium to full-bodied palate reveals a lot of depth and polish, delivering mouth-coating red and black fruits with loads of fragrant earth and floral sparks, framed by velvety tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and mineral tinged. This is a singular, fascinating expression of the vintage and highly recommended! - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate

2020 Pape Clement Rouge (Pessac Leognan)
97-99 JD / 97-98 JS / 96-98 WA / 95-97 VM / 94 DE

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2020 Pape Clement comes barreling out of the glass with bold notes of cassis, plum preserves and licorice, giving way to scents of cedar chest, crushed rocks, charcoal and pencil lead. The medium to full-bodied palate is tightly coiled with beautiful tension and a firm, finely grained texture locking in the layers of black fruits and minerals, finishing with great length and energy. The blend this year is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot, aging mainly in French oak barriques, 66% new, with about 10% aging in large oak foudres. The wine will spend approximately 18 months in barrels. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate

2020 Pape Clement Blanc (Pessac Leognan)
97-98 JS / 94-96 WA / 94 DE / 92-94 VM

Lots of white peach and red apple with crushed-stone and pine-needle undertones. Full-bodied, yet compact and linear with beautiful toffee, light caramel, praline and nougat character to the fruit. Hints of wood. It shows phenolic tension and form, yet remains agile and energetic. Impressive for the vintage. - James Suckling

2020 Clinet (Pomerol)
96-98+ JD / 96-98 WA / 96-97 JS / 95 DE / 93-95 VM

I continue to love the wines from this estate, and the 2020 Château Clinet is no exception. Straight-up sensational notes of blueberries, cassis, violets, tobacco, and earth all emerge from the glass, and this beauty is full-bodied, with a rich, concentrated mid-palate, flawless balance, and a great finish. It shows the tighter, fresher, more focused style of the vintage, yet it still brings plenty of mid-palate depth as well as an expansive texture. It has enough oak to warrant short-term bottle age but will have 25-30 years of overall longevity. This is a gorgeous wine. - Jeb Dunnuck

2020 Capbern (Saint Estephe)
GVWM Over-Achiever
94-96 JD / 92-93 JS / 91 DE

Readers looking for an off-the-charts value should snatch up the 2020 Château Capbern, which emerges from the same team as Calon Ségur. Offering a vivid bouquet of cassis, leafy tobacco, violets, damp earth, and chocolate, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, perfectly ripe fruit (not overripe, not underripe), ultra-fine, integrated tannins, and the mix of freshness and richness that’s part of all great wines. It’s a hidden gem in Saint-Estèphe. - Jeb Dunnuck
