Another huge day of releases from Bordeaux today starting with the inimitable 99-100 point First Growth Chateau Margaux! Also not to be missed are the outstanding Pavillon Rouge and Pavillon Blanc.

Château Smith Haut Lafitte have also released their two cracking Pessac-Leognan this morning which are sure to be in high demand with eye-catching labels and very high praise. The red has not one but three critics pegging it as potentially-perfect!

We are also excited to announce the release of the 98-99 point 2020 Léoville Las Cases, a classic showing from this magnificent Saint-Julien property.

The legendary Château Palmer have also released their 2020 today - although few of the major critics have had a chance to taste and report their findings, Jane Anson at Decanter gave it 97 points calling it "velvety and seductive."

Finally we are pleased to offer our "house" Bordeaux, the excellent value Chateau Carignan and Carignan Prima which are widely known to punch well above their weights.

Also now available is a Vintage Report from Andy Lench, founder and CEO of Bordeaux Wine Locators, our importer, from his 36th year tasting Bordeaux from barrel. Read it now.

Our Futures Landing Page includes our Wines of the Vintage, Over-Achievers, and Value Drinkers, while it continues to be updated with new wines daily. We'll continue sending offers on the most compelling wines as they are released...stay tuned!

2020 Margaux (Margaux)
99-100 JS / 99 DE / 97-99 VM / 97-99 WA / 96-98 JD

A brilliant Margaux; one that takes a sigh and then releases the huge floral, eucalyptus and crushed mint whoosh that comes in waves though the palate. You get the concentration of the vintage in an entirely positive light, with a suave softness to the tannins that makes it stand head and shoulders above many others. Plenty in common with the 1996 vintage - the knitted down tannins, the completeness, the juicy blackcurrant purity and acidity on the finish, and the certainty of long ageing. Real clarity of flavour. Alcohol level is lower than both the 2018 and 2019, but tannins and anthocyanins are at the same level as in 2018. 36% of overall harvest, and 1% Petit Verdot completes the blend. A yield of 36hl/ha. 98-100. - Jane Anson, Decanter

2020 Smith Haut Lafitte Rouge (Pessac Leognan)
99-100 JS / 98-100 WA / 97-100 JD / 97 DE / 95-97 VM

A special black label for 2020 celebrates the 30th harvest of the Cathiard family at the head the estate.

So much blackcurrant, graphite and iodine character. Full-bodied. Incredible quality to the tannins. They are polished yet powerful. It’s so long and complete with such depth and toned muscles. Vertical. Very fresh and energetic. Will it be better than the famous 2015? Maybe the best ever. From organically grown grapes. 65% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot, 4% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot. - James Suckling

2020 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc (Pessac Leognan)
94-96+ WA / 95-96 JS / 96 DE / 93-95 VM

A special black label for 2020 celebrates the 30th harvest of the Cathiard family at the head the estate.

The 2020 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc is 90% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Sauvignon Gris and 5% Sémillon. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak, 50% new, within which it will age for 12 months on lees with bâtonnage before spending a further two to three months in tank. It prances out of the glass with vivacious notes of lime blossoms, Golden Delicious apples and green mango, plus hints of coriander seed, shaved ginger and wet pebbles. The medium-bodied palate possesses lovely harmony even at this nascent stage, featuring bright apple and citrus flavors with soft acidity and a chalky finish. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate

2020 Palmer (Margaux)

97 JS / 97 DE

Vivid colours, and the aromatics grab hold straight away. This is intense and concentrated, elegant, balanced and classical, all about the texture which is velvety and seductive with softly-grained tannins. Moves oh so slowly through the palate with dozens of layers to get hold of. The overall feel is precise, slow and seductive, with appellation and estate signature at every turn. Sappy, hawthorn freshness, rosemary, redcurrant, tobacco, cigar box and dark chocolate shavings on the finish. 3.77pH, 78IPT, 55% of overall production, with 13% press wine. - Jane Anson, Decanter

2020 Leoville Las Cases (Saint Julien)

98-99 JS / 95-97+ JD / 96-98 WA / 96 DE / 95-98 VM

The flagship 2020 Château Léoville Las Cases checks in as 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc, and 8% Merlot, raised in 80% new French oak. Hitting 13.68% in alcohol with a Ph of 3.8 and an IPT of 79, it shows the dense, concentrated, focused style of the vintage and it's going to be one of the longer-lived wines of the vintage. Deep purple-hued, with an incredible sense of minerality in its blackcurrant and black cherry fruits, it's full-bodied, has a rich, layered mid-palate, lots of tannins, and a great finish. It's a beautiful wine and holds onto the more inward, concentrated style of the vintage while still showing serious depth of fruit. It's going to take a decade (or more) of bottle age to get anywhere close to the early stages of maturity but will keep for 30-40 years. - Jeb Dunnuck

2020 Pavillon Blanc Du Chateau Margaux (Margaux)

97 DE

Clear gunsmoke character with slate and graphite, also a ton of white peach, white pear, some sweet mango and a scrape of salinity on the finish. This is balanced and successful, and easy to recommend, completing a strong set of wines at Margaux in the 2020 vintage. 40% of the overall production in the final blend. 3.01pH. Harvest from 24 August to September 1. 100th anniversary of the name Pavillon Blanc (even though they have made a white wine at Margaux for 300 years). - Jane Anson, Decanter

2020 Carignan Prima (Cadillac Cotes De Bordeaux)

GVWM Over-Achiever & Value Drinker

93-94 JS / 16.5 JR

Dark purple and ripe and scented. Surprisingly plush and juicy, loaded with creamy blackcurrant fruit and vanilla toast. Throat-warming finish. Quite seductive, although I suspect the alcohol is quite high. It will be ready to drink relatively early and easy to love. The 2017 sells for around £20 per bottle, retail, which makes this really VGV. TC, JancisRobinson .com

2020 Chateau Carignan (Cadillac Cotes De Bordeaux)

GVWM Value Drinker

90-91 JS / 16 JR

Very dark in colour. Chewy tannins, although they’re not at all green. Not quite as rich and generous as the Prima, but very correct and delivering good, tobacco-spiced fruit. I see Private Cellar is selling the 2017 for £16, which is pretty GV. Sunday lunch wine! - TC, JancisRobinson .com
