The hits from Bordeaux have been coming all week and today is no exception starting with the Domaines Clarence Dillon collection, including the magnificent 1st Growth, Château Haut-Brion with a solid 100 points from James Suckling plus two more potentially-perfect ratings.

Also from the Dillon stable, La Mission Haut Brion is often thought of as the unofficial "6th First Growth" and when you drink the wine it’s easy to see why. We've lost count of the amount of times that vintages of La Mission have outperformed First Growths under blind conditions, and the 97-99pt 2020 is one of our wines of the vintage.

Also available are the rare and outstanding 2020 whites from Haut Brion (97-98pts) and La Mission Haut Brion (98-99pts) along with the full collection of Clarence Dillon Wines including the "Wow"-worthy 97-98 point Quintus from St Emilion.

Another potentially perfect Pessac Leognan debut today is the "seamless" 2020 Haut-Bailly.

And finally from Saint Estephe is one of our over-achievers for the vintage, a 98-pointer from Montrose.

2020 Haut Brion (Pessac Leognan)
GVWM Wine of the Vintage
100 JS / 98-100 JD / 98-100 WA / 97-99 VM

Unquestionably one of the top wines in this impressive vintage, the 2020 Château Haut-Brion checks in as 42.8% Merlot, 39.7% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance Cabernet Franc, all of which will spend 15-18 months in 77% new French oak. Its deep purple color is followed by a thrilling nose of mineral-laced blackcurrants, black raspberries, toast, spice, scorched earth, and graphite. Possessing an almost Lafite-like elegance on the palate, it nevertheless has huge dry extract, full-bodied richness, flawless balance, and beautiful tannins. Per the spec sheet, the alcohol is an estimated 15% with a pH of 3.78, so it’s no shrinking violet, yet it never shows a hint of headiness or being over the top. I finished my note with “Where can I buy some?” I suspect this wine will require a solid decade to hit the early stages of maturity and will be a 30-, 40-, or possibly a 50-year wine. - Jeb Dunnuck

2020 Haut Brion Blanc (Pessac Leognan)
97-98 JS / 95-97+ WA / 96 DE / 94-96 VM

A blend of 71.4% Sauvignon Blanc and 28.6% Semillon, harvested 20th to 27th August and with an alcohol of 13.9%, the 2020 Haut-Brion Blanc slowly unfurls to reveal notes of fresh pears, spiced apple slices, orange zest and lemongrass, plus touches of wet pebbles, dillseed and baking bread. The medium-bodied palate wears its lightly spicy apple and pear layers with grace and sophistication, supported by a racy backbone and subtly creamy texture, finishing long and mineral laced. It will need time, but there's no doubting it's a knock-out. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate

2020 La Mission Haut Brion (Pessac Leognan)
GVWM Wine of the Vintage
97-99 WA / 98 DE / 97-98 JS / 96-98 JD / 96-98 VM

A kick of black fruit and confident spice right from the first nose, this is an intense and concentrated La Mission, tightly in control, not letting up from beginning to end. The pencil lead and bitter dark chocolate is layered in between the cassis notes in a way that makes you see the Cabernet influence although this is majority Merlot (once again - this is a character of the year, low yields of Cabernet mean Merlot is more featured in the blend than usual; but the intensity of the Cabernets mean that it still has an outsized influence on flavour profile). Grilled coffee beans overtake on the close of play, this is seductive and switches beautifully between the tannins pressing in on the palate and the juice expanding things outwards. This is the wine to go for in the Domaines Clarence Dillon stable this year. Harvest from 7th to 29th September. - Jane Anson, Decanter

2020 La Mission Haut Brion Blanc (Pessac Leognan)

98-99 JS / 95-97 WA / 94-96 VM / 95 DE

The 2020 La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc is pure seduction. Creamy and layered in the glass, the 2020 is elegance personified. Hints of spice and white flowers lead into apricot, white peach, mint and sage, all beautifully knit together. The 2020 balances freshness with textural intensity so sell. It's an absolutely gorgeous wine. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

2020 Haut Bailly (Pessac Leognan)

99-100 JS / 96-98+ WA / 96-98 JD / 95-97 VM / 96 DE

A legendary Haut-Bailly in the making, the 2020 sports a dense purple color to go with powerful notes of blackcurrants, black cherries, scorched earth, and graphite. Reminding me of the 2010, it takes plenty of air to show at its best yet is full-bodied, has a seamless texture, massive of ultra-fine tannins, and a blockbuster of a finish. It's one of the most structured, powerful Haut-Bailly I've ever tasted, yet it still has the classic elegance, nuance, and length of this terrific terroir. It will need 5-7 years (or more) of bottle age but will have 50 years of overall longevity. The 2020 is 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, and 3% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. - Jeb Dunnuck

2020 Montrose (Saint Estephe)

GVWM Over-Achiever

98 DE / 95-97 WE / 18+ JR

A serious wall of blueberry and blackberry compote, and a ton of savoury Cabernet sinew and freshness. This is a great Montrose, inky, broad-shouldered and structured. It needs time to aerate and open in the glass, then you see the precision, the heft, the chiselling of the fruits with a ton of graphite, cigar box and campfire smoke - huge persistency. This will need a long time and will reward patience. One of the few where a 1986, 2016 and 2010 comparison makes sense. A yield around 30hl/ha. 1% Petit Verdot, 3.86pH, IPT 80. 45% of the overall production. - Jane Anson, Decanter

2020 Quintus (Saint Emilion)

97-98 JS / 95-97 WA / 94-96 JD / 92-94 VM / 93 DE

The 2020 Quintus is a blend of 62.5% Merlot and 37.5% Cabernet Franc, weighing in with an alcohol of 15.4%. Displaying a deep purple-black color, it leaps from the glass with bold notes of crushed blackberries, boysenberries and stewed plums, plus suggestions of chocolate mint, clove oil, lilacs and star anise. The full-bodied palate is densely laden with rich black fruits and floral accents, framed by well-balanced acidity and finely grained tannins, finishing with great length and impressive energy. Judging from this barrel sample, this is the finest, most complex and complete Quintus yet—bravo! - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine advocate
