Saving one of the very best from Bordeaux and one of our wines of the vintage for last, today we have the undeniably brilliant and potentially perfect 2020 Pomerol from the Thienponts, Vieux-Château-Certan:

"There are going to be two ways to approach this:

1) Just let the remarkably sensual, inexplicable beauty of it wash over you, or
2) Try to unravel all those intricate layers and have it blow you mind

Either way, this is simply an incredible achievement—bravo Alexandre and Guillaume Thienpont!" - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate

"This is unquestionably one of the biggest, richest, sexiest wines in the vintage, and my money is on it flirting with perfection." - Jeb Dunnuck

Also from the Right Bank and the Thienpont family, we are pleased to offer a very limited quantity of 98-99pt  L'If 2020, Jacques Thienpont of Le Pin's project in St Emilion.

In addition, we have a small quantity of Jonathan Maltus' 97-99pt Le Dome from St Emilion, while his other labels can also be found on our website.

2020 Vieux Chateau Certan (Pomerol)
GVWM Wine of the Vintage
98-100 WA / 98-99 JS / 97-99 JD / 96-98 VM / 95 DE

The 2020 Vieux Château Certan is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, picked on the 14th to the 24th of September for the Merlot, then on the 28th and 29th of September for the Cabernet Franc. The pH is 3.77 and the alcohol is 14.5%. Deep purple-black colored, it needs considerable coaxing, swirling and a lot of patience before it finally lets rip an intoxicating perfume of ripe, juicy black plums, Morello cherries, candied violets, black truffles and crushed rocks, giving way to hints of black tea, molten licorice and Sichuan pepper, plus a waft of dusty red soil. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers achingly ripe, silt-like tannins and shimmering freshness that melds with the black fruits and earthy layers with jaw-dropping seamlessness, finishing with layer upon layer of mineral and savory suggestions and, finally, a gorgeous floral whisper. There are going to be two ways to approach this: 1) Just let the remarkably sensual, inexplicable beauty of it wash over you or 2) Try to unravel all those intricate layers and have it blow you mind. Either way, this is simply an incredible achievement—bravo Alexandre and Guillaume Thienpont! - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate

2020 Le Dome (Saint Emilion)

97-99 WA / 94-97 JD / 96 DE / 94-96 VM / 94-95 JS

The 2020 Le Dome is a blend of 80% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot with an alcohol of 13.9% and a pH of 3.69. The Merlot was harvested on September 29th, with the Cabernet Franc on October 8th and 9th. It is being aged in 80% new French oak barrels. Deep garnet-purple in color, it comes storming out of the glass with thunderous scents of stewed plums, blueberry preserves and chocolate-covered cherries, followed by impactful, fragrant notions of rose oil, ground cloves, eucalyptus and pencil shavings. The palate is jaw-droppingly elegant, considering the power of the nose, featuring elegantly crafted black and red fruit layers with very ripe, finely grained tannins and tons of freshness, finishing long and perfumed. Le Dome is from the JCP Maltus portfolio of skillfully crafted Saint-Émilion wines. Neil White is the head winemaker and Thomas Duclos is a consultant here. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate

2020 L'If (Saint Emilion)
98-99 JS / 95-97 VM

The 2020 L'If is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine. In most vintages so far, L'If has been a dense, textured Saint-Émilion. In 2020, all of that energy seems directed toward extreme verticality rather than heft. I have to say, it’s a style I like a lot. Bright acids and persistent tannins drive a core of red/purplish fruit, while floral, spice and mineral-drenched accents linger. The 2020 is a blend of 84% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Franc, picked on 9/16, 9/24 and 9/26 for the Merlot and 10/1 for the Franc. This is the first vintage that includes fruit from a new parcel in the Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse district. A statuesque, captivating beauty, L'If is loaded with potential. I loved it. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
