Kicking off the highlights of releases so far this week is the 95-97pt Chateau Beychevelle, a classic Saint-Julien that earned some of its highest barrel scores in many vintages. Beychevelle's distinctive label of a sailing boat, and the very name itself, are a reference to the 17th Century owner, the Duke of Epernon, Admiral of France, for whom passing ships would lower their sales. It is typically a rich, smooth, forward Saint-Julien, and quite high in Merlot for the Left Bank. Act fast as the volume released is down 20%!

Count Stephan von Neipperg has also released two of his superb Saint-Emilions, the 97-98pt La Mondotte and the 95-97pt Canon-la-Gaffeliere. The von Neippergs, who have been making wine since the 13th Century, acquired these two properties in Saint-Emilion in 1971, and raised them both up to reach Premier Grand Cru Classé B status in 2012. Both are farmed organically. La Mondotte is a tiny 4.5 hectare vineyard on the Saint-Emlion plateau, and produces a more perfumed, aromatic style than that of Canon-la-Gaffelière, situated at the bottom of the slope beneath the town, which is typically defined by power and elegance.

From Baron Philippe de Rothschild's stable of properties in Pauillac, and next door to Mouton, is Chateau d’Armailhac. First planted with vines in 1750, and known as Mouton d’Armailhacq in the 18th century, d’Armailhac has been in the Rothschild portfolio since 1933. Given that it is adjacent to Château Mouton Rothschild on the north and west sides, and receives the same care and attention from the Rothschild team, it represents superb value for Pauillac!

Also released this week is the 94-96pt Chateau Lagrange, one of the best properties in Saint-Julien,

thanks to 30 years of investment and nurturing from the Suntory Group. Once one of the largest estates, owned by the Baron de Brane in the eighteenth Century, it had fallen into disrepair, and the chateau almost burned down in the 1950s. Suntory doubled the vineyard area, and replanted all the vines, bringing the estate back to the prestigious level its ideal location deserves. Their sloping vineyards are the highest in Saint-Julien, neighboring those of Gruaud Larose and Branaire Ducru.

2020 Chateau Beychevelle (Saint Julien)
95-97 JD / 94-96 WA / 94-96 VM / 94-95 JS / 94 DE

Based on 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot, the Grand Vin 2020 Château Beychevelle is a stunner that does everything right, offering a monster bouquet of black and blue fruits as well as candied violets, incense, flowers, and toasty oak. A ripe, full-bodied, incredibly sexy wine in every sense, it has a great mid-palate, ripe, velvety tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. It's one of the more up-front, exotic wines in the vintage and should be accessible with just short-term cellaring. - Jeb Dunnuck

2020 Chateau Canon La Gaffeliere (Saint Emilion)

95-97 JD / 95-96 JS / 94-96+ VM / 94 DE

Lots of blue fruits, leafy herbs, chocolate, and earthy goodness emerge from the 2020 Château Canon-La-Gaffeliere, a medium to full-bodied, dense, focused, elegant Saint-Emilion that needs plenty of air to show at its best. The purity of fruit is remarkable, and while it starts out tight and focused, it blossoms with air, showing a more expansive, layered, rich yet still fresh texture that keeps you coming back to the glass. It’s a thrilling Saint-Emilion readers should snatch up. - Jeb Dunnuck

2020 La Mondotte (Saint Emilion)

97-98 JS / 96-98 JD / 95-97 VM / 94 DE

The 2020 La Mondotte does not mess about, delivering a payload of ripe, opulent blackberry, cassis, India ink and figgy scents, exotic but very sensual and managing to retain impressive delineation. The balanced palate presents succulent tannins and a satiny texture. There is real depth to this La Mondotte, yet the acidity keeps it light on its toes, and there is impressive salinity toward the finish. This constitutes one of the finest La Mondotte releases in recent years. Chapeau! - Neal Martin, Vinouw Media

2020 Chateau D'Armailhac (Pauillac)

93-94 JS / 93 DE / 92-94 VM / 92-94 JD / 90-92 WA

The 2020 d’Armailhac, raised in 50% new oak with a planned 17-month barrel maturation, is a little deeper in color compared to the Clerc Milon. I find more complexity on the nose of blackberry, briar, cedar and pencil box aromas, less extravagant than previous vintages and more terroir-driven, perhaps. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins that have a little more edge than the Clerc Milon, plus there is slightly more mineralité and depth. In particular, the finish is very harmonious and fans out wonderfully. This Château d’Armailhac is a splendid wine in the making, and one of the best examples from the estate that I have tasted out of barrel. - Neal Martin, Vinous Media

2020 Chateau Lagrange (Saint Julien)
94-96 JD / 94-96 WA / 93-95 VM / 93-94 JS / 93 DE

Deep purple-black in color, the 2020 Lagrange leaps from the glass with vibrant notes of redcurrant jelly, ripe blackcurrants and minted blackberries, followed by nuances of dark chocolate, star anise and mossy tree bark. The medium-bodied palate is both super intense and super elegant, featuring exquisitely ripe, fine-grained tannins and seamless freshness to frame the bright, crunchy black and red fruits, finishing long and mineral laced. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate
