Two superb wines were released from Pessac-Leognan this morning, the 95-97+pt red and 96-97pt white from Domaine de Chevalier. A family owned estate, the vineyards are surrounded by forests in the highest part of the Pessac appellation, and the vines stay cool with the wines retaining a remarkable freshness. Renowned for both their red and their white, Domaine de Chevalier are on a run of good form at the moment, producing some of their best ever wines. The production is relatively small and the wines sell out quickly!

From Pomerol today we see the release of a "quintessential" & "extremely classic" 96-97pt Gazin.

While from Margaux comes the 94-95pt Lascombes, a second growth of the 1855 classification, named after the Chevalier de Lascombes. Its terroir is made up of forty of the best plots in Margaux, and significant investment has gone into the wine production since 2001.

2020 Domaine De Chevalier Rouge (Pessac Leognan)
96-97 JS / 95-97+ JD / 95-97+ WA  / 95-97 VM / 95 DE

From an estate that’s been on fire over the past decade, the 2020 Domaine De Chevalier is another brilliant wine in the making and checks in as 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and 3% Cabernet Franc. Offering impressive cassis and darker berry fruits, it has complex notes of crushed flowers, violets, and damp earth-like nuances. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, with ultra-fine tannins and a silky, layered, seamless texture, it shines for both its richness and its balance. It also shuts down quite quickly, so if you’re going to drink bottles, try one in its youth. Otherwise, be sure to give bottles 7-8 years in a cold cellar. It should have 30-40 years of overall longevity. - Jeb Dunnuck

2020 Domaine De Chevalier Blanc (Pessac Leognan)

96-97 JS / 94-96 WA / 94-96 VM / 95 DE

The 2020 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc is fabulous. Bright and airy in the glass, the 2020 bristles with energy. Lemon confit, crushed rocks, mint and white pepper all pulse with tons of vibrancy. This finely-cut, chiseled white is going to need a number of years to be at its best, but it is so impressive and so full of potential. Bright saline notes punctuate the dazzling finish. Time in the glass brings out the wine's texture and layers. The Blanc is one of the world's great wines, hands down.- Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

2020 Gazin (Pomerol)

96-97 JS / 94-96 JD / 94 DE / 94 VM / 92-94 WA

The 2020 Gazin, which contains no Cabernet Franc this year, has a wonderful bouquet of blackberry, raspberry, crushed stone and pressed iris petal scents, very focused and precise, that really whisks you down to Pomerol. The medium-bodied palate displays fine-grained tannins and a silver bead of acidity. Very sapid with a little more dryness on the finish than its peers, which gets the saliva flowing. Classic Pomerol through and through- Neal Martin, Vinous Media

2020 Lascombes (Margaux)

94-95 JS / 92-94 JD / 92-94 WA / 92-94 VM / 92 DE

A terrific success in the vintage, the 2020 Château Lascombes sports a dense purple color as well as gorgeous black and blue fruits interwoven with plenty of toasty oak. Playing in the medium to full-bodied end of the spectrum, it has velvety tannins, good mid-palate density, and beautiful overall balance. It’s one of those wines that brings plenty of ripe fruit yet always has a solid sense of elegance and purity. Tasted twice. - Jeb Dunnuck
