Some great releases today worth taking a look at - if Neal Martin says, "ignore at your peril", you should probably take note of 2020 Malartic Lagraviere!

Antonio Galloni has said that in 2020, "Pessac-Leognan is the most successful appellation as a whole... the top names are magnificent, but there’s more to it than that. I was especially struck by the quality of both the second wines at top properties as well as by wines from a number of more modest châteaux." One such château, who commands a modest price, but makes brilliant wines, is Malartic Lagravière. Commencing with the 2020 vintage, the estate has chosen a new bottle for the grand cru, highlighted by an engraved ship, the symbol of the estate.

The Clos Du Marquis from Saint-Julien "brims over with breeding" and is "simply gorgeous"! While it is part of the Château Leoville Las Cases stable, it is not a 2nd wine, being made from its own unique parcels of vines in Saint-Julien.

Finally, Château Meyney is a great value Saint-Estèphe that often punches well above its weight, and stands up handsomely against some of its more illustrious neighbors when tasted blind once in bottle. "Another wine worth seeking out" according to Jeb Dunnuck.

2020 Malartic Lagraviere Rouge (Pessac Leognan)
94-96 VM / 94-95 JS / 93-95 JD / 94 JD / 92-94 WA

The 2020 Malartic Lagravière, whose picking was completed on September 24, before the rains, has a bright, vivid nose of mineral-infused red fruit mixed with hints of blueberry and cassis. Very focused and precise, this is an aromatically sophisticated Pessac-Léognan. The palate is medium-bodied with graphite-tinged black fruit, hints of wild mint coming through, and lively and tensile toward the finish. This is one of the best vintages of Malartic Lagravière that I have encountered out of bottle. Ignore at your perilNeal Martin Vinous Media

2020 Malartic Lagraviere Blanc (Pessac Leognan)

95-96 JS / 92-94 VM / 93 DE / 91-93 WA

The 2020 Malartic-Lagravière Blanc has a very well-defined bouquet, although unlike its peers, this demands a few minutes to find its voice. But it is worth the patience, delivering almost Burgundy-like citrus fruit mixed with apricot, citrus lemon and crushed stone aromas. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity that cuts through the intense notes of citrus peel, lychee and chamomile. Great energy here, and it fans out gloriously toward the finish. Sophisticated and quite delicious. Neal Martin, Vinous Media

2020 Clos Du Marquis (Saint Julien)

94-96 JD / 94-95 JS / 93-95 WA / 92-94 VM / 92 DE

Pure crème de cassis, tobacco, black cherries, lead pencil, and a wonderful sense of minerality emerge from the 2020 Clos Du Marquis, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a pure, elegant texture, plenty of ripe tannins, and the vibrant, focused, lengthy style of the vintage front and center. It's going to need 4-6 years of bottle age, possibly more, but the balance, purity, and precision are all brilliant. The blend is 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, raised in 40% new French oak. The technical information checks in with the alcohol at 13.57%, pH of 3.76, and an IPT of 84. This will be a long-lived Saint-Julien! - Jeb Dunnuck

2020 Meyney (Saint Estephe

93-94 JS / 93 DE / 91-93 JD / 91-93 VM

The 2020 Meyney has a lively, quite powerful nose delivering plenty of blackberry, boysenberry and briar scents, plus touches of freshly tilled loam and wilted iris flower; I appreciate how forthright this is. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins and graphite-laced blackberry. Quite citric toward the finish, showing Pauillac-like pretentions. This is a classy Saint-Estèphe from Meyney that will age with style. - Neal Martin, Viinous Media
