The 2020 en primeur campaign entered a new phase with this morning's release of the legendary First Growth, 99-100pt Château Lafite-Rothschild. Lafite has been on an amazing run of form in recent years, and the 2020 vintage does not fail to impress!

"This is quintessential Lafite in that it is not a powerful or immensely structured wine, but rather a First Growth with unerring balance and harmony, one that is unashamedly classic in style." - Neal Martin, Vinous Media

Alongside their release of Lafite Rothschild this morning, the Domaines Barons de Rothschild have released their leading Pomerol wine, 98-99pt Château L'EvangileThis is is one of the most prestigious estates in Pomerol and produces one of the most sought-after wines in the appellation. It is located in the far east of Pomerol and its vineyards border those of La Conseillante, Gazin and Cheval Blanc.

"The 2020 L'Évangile is fabulous...easily the most Lafite-like L'Évangile I have ever tasted. Don't miss it!" - Antonio Galloni

Finally from the DBR stable in Pauillac comes the "impressive" 95-96pt Duhart Milon that we've slated as an over-achiever for the 2020 vintage.

2020 Lafite Rothschild (Pauillac)
GVWM Wine of the Vintage
99-100 JS / 97-99 JD / 96-98 WA / 96-98 VM / 97 DE

The 2020 Château Lafite-Rothschild checks in as 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot brought up in roughly 90% or more of new French oak. It's a deep, inky-hued Lafite boasting incredible notes of crème de cassis, lead pencil shavings, graphite, crushed stone, and gravelly earth-like minerality. Full-bodied and beautifully balanced, with terrific purity of fruit, it has ripe tannins, a layered, seamless mouthfeel, and a great, great finish. It should surpass the 2015 and 2017 and be in the same realm as the 2018 and 2019. Despite its richness and depth, it hit just 12.8% alcohol, with an IPT of 72 and a pH of 3.5. It’s going to be just about immortal. - Jeb Dunnuck

2020 L'Evangile (Pomerol)

GVWM Wine of the Vintage

98-99 JS / 98 DE / 96-98+ WA / 95-97+ JD / 95-97 VM

The sculpting of L'Evangile that began over the past few vintages continues, and the 2020 is a gorgeous wine. Pristine fruit, silky with a whoosh of menthol. It elevates over the palate, both dense and light, with blueberry and raspberry fruits, and pulses of bitter almond and honeysuckle on the finish that gives focus and spice. Juliette Couderc joined L'Evangile (from DBR Lafite's Long Dai winery) in September 2020 so for the harvest of this wine, working alongside technical director Olivier Tregoat. 50% first wine, with no Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend this year because it was so over-concentrated that it made too much impact. Increased selective harvesting meant going through vineyard plots six times to bring in the grapes as they ripened. A yield of 32hl/ha. In the final year of organic conversion, so this next vintage 2021 will be certified. - Jane Anson, Decanter

2020 Duhart Milon Rothschild (Pauillac)

GVWM Over-Achiever

95-96 JS / 94-96 JD / 95 DE / 91-93+ WA / 90-92 VM

Lots of tobacco, damp earth, chocolate, and lead pencil notes define the 2020 Château Duhart-Milon. Medium to full-bodied, it has a beautifully balanced mouthfeel, loads of blue and black fruits, and ripe yet certainly present tannins. Its relatively plush, rounded style is not too dissimilar from the 2016, but it offers ample structure as well. The blend is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Merlot, and it hit 13% natural alcohol. This is another classic, concentrated, impressive wine from this team. - Jeb Dunnuck
