We are excited to announce the release of the 2021 Château Léoville Las Cases, a classic yet charming showing from this magnificent Saint-Julien property, which positively transcends the vintage. This revered 2nd Growth is one of the oldest properties in the Medoc and it is without doubt the leading estate in Saint-Julien. The vineyards are superbly sited on gravelly-clay soils with the largest plot being surrounded by a stone wall and stretching between the village of Saint-Julien and their neighbor, Château Latour. At nearly 30% less than the 2020, Las Cases may well have nailed this vintage on both the wine making and the value proposition.

Another wine that is on many people's wish lists this year is the quite  brilliant 2021 Château Cheval Blanc. This 2021 really did impress our colleagues when they tasted the En Primeur barrel sample a few weeks ago and it is definitely a strong candidate for "wine of the vintage." The 2021 had the biggest percentage of Cabernet Franc since 2011, and the first time ever to use more Cabernet Franc than Merlot in the blend. The results are spectacular.

Also from St Emilion comes the 2021 Chateau Pavie that is "shaping up to be a very special wine."  It is the last remaining bearer of the incredibly prestigious St-Emilion Grand Cru Classé A accreditation, which it won in 2012. This elite club consisted of just four properties: Pavie, Ausone, Cheval Blanc and Angelus. Pavie has been on fire in recent vintages, and in 2021 have produced a great wine, very much in the Pavie style, yet dialed back on the power, with more minerality. When our colleagues visited the very impressive new winery buildings last month to taste the Perse line up, the Pavie certainly shined!

2021 Leoville Las Cases (Saint Julien)

95-97 WA / 94-96 VM

One of the wines of the vintage, the 2021 Léoville Las Cases is reminiscent of a hypothetical blend of the 1999 and 1996—only better. Offering up incipiently complex aromas of cassis, plums and dark berries mingled with loamy soil, cigar wrapper and exotic spices, it's full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with superb amplitude and concentration, velvety tannins, lively acids and a long, penetrating finish. Uniting classicism and charm, it exemplifies how a great terroir, exigent agronomy and meticulous winemaking can deliver greatness even in a less propitious vintage. It's a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc and a mere 5% Merlot this year, checking in at 13.2% alcohol. - William Kelley, Wine Advocate

2021 Cheval Blanc (Saint Emilion)

97-98 JS / 96-98 VM / 95-97 WA / 95-97 WI

The 2021 Cheval Blanc is one of the wines of the vintage. Vertical and aristocratic in bearing, Cheval is just stunning. Time in the glass brings out compelling inner sweetness and perfume to play off a core of rich dark fruit, gravel, spice, menthol and dried flowers. I also tasted the final three blending components, none of which hints at the magnificence of the Grand Vin. Stunning - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

2021 Le Petit Cheval (Saint Emilion)

94-95 JS / 92-94 VM

The 2021 Le Petit Cheval is fabulous. A parcel of Cabernet Sauvignon typically used for the Grand Vin gives the 2021 its core of dark fruit. Heady and explosive in the glass, the 2021 offers up a spellbinding array of dark fruit rose petal, mocha, incense and licorice. All the elements meld together so effortlessly. The 2021 is a dazzling Petit Cheval. That's all there is to it. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

2021 Pavie (Saint Emilion)

95-97 VM / 95-96 JS

The 2021 Pavie is a wine of tremendous potential. Naturally, it shows the more mid-weight style of the year and yet there is plenty of depth as well as energy that starts to emerge with a bit of time in the glass. Bright saline notes shape the wine while extending the finish and adding so much drive. The 2021 is shaping up to be a very special wine. All it needs is time. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
