Before we get to the latest releases, we're pleased to share the 2022 Bordeaux Vintage Report by Andy Lench, founder and CEO of Bordeaux Wine Locators, our importer, from his 37th year tasting Bordeaux in barrel. Read it now learn more about this truly remarkable harvest!

Now to today's wines - we are delighted to offer one of the most sought after Saint Juliens, the 2022 Château Léoville Barton. Léoville Barton is one of the best-known Médoc estates and is consitently popular year after year. We had the pleasure of visiting the chateau a couple of weeks ago to taste the new vintage from barrel, and it left us all very impressed - it expresses the Saint-Julien terroir beautifully and has great depth of fruit, but most striking was its sheer elegance. This is the first vintage to be produced in the newly refurbished winery at the Chateau where, with a wider selection of vat sizes for fermenting separate plots, and a superior press, they are able to achieve far higher levels of precision than in the past. It certainly shows with this vintage!

One of the stars of the Médoc and a wine likely to equal or surpass its 2019 and 2016 counterparts. - William Kelley, Wine Advocate

The Barton family have also released the 2022 Château Langoa Barton, sister estate to Léoville Barton.  Langoa is usually rather overshadowed during the barrel tastings, but this year we were blown away by how good the Langoa Barton is! Immediately intriguing on the nose, with floral notes, deep blue fruit and wonderful elegance, this is another superb interpretation of the Saint-Julien terroir.

There's a purity to the 2022 that is impossible to miss. Langoa could turn out to be one of the Sleepers of 2022, especially among the more affordable wines of the Left Bank. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

Also very compelling from Saint Emilion is the 2022 Clos de Sarpe released last week, but with a new glowing 96-98pt review from Jeb Dunnuck. Just to the northeast of Saint-Emilion itself, near the cooler Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes region, Château Clos de Sarpe covers a tiny 3.7 hectares of the south-sloping Sarpe Plateau and consists of the classic Saint-Emilion upper plateau terroir of thin clay over limestone soils. Purchased by the Jean Beyney in 1923, the family run estate is now managed by his grandson Jean-Guy. The vines, mostly Merlot, with 15% Cabernet Franc, are some of the oldest in Saint-Emilion, mostly 50 years old or more. Clos de Sarpe is typically rich yet fresh with great longevity, and with the quality of the vintage in Saint-Emilion, the 2022 promises to be a long lived wine indeed!

Fabulous...beams of vibrant acidity that lend sizzling tension...but the wine’s sublime balance impresses most...another important Clos de Sarpe under the guidance of Maylis Marcenat, who continues to bring much-needed new energy to this striking property. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

"This is the 40th year I have tasted barrel samples in Bordeaux, but I have never come across anything like the 2022 vintage. It was one of the hottest and driest growing seasons in the history of France’s most famous wine region, yet it produced thousands of opulent and structured but still fresh and balanced wines. They are exciting...it was a joyous and fascinating experience to taste so many special wines. And there was high quality from top to bottom. The 2022 vintage really is something unique." - James Suckling

2022 Leoville Barton (Saint Julien)
GVWM Stand-Out Mid Range Wine & Over-Achiever

Balanced, elegant, built to last, with campfire smoke, turmeric, cloves, blackberry, cassis, cherry pit, graphite and mint leaf. As with the Langoa, this has more exuberance and spice than usual, but the tannins kick in pretty quickly, providing intensity, and balance. The concentration of the vintage almost seems to take it from St Julien into Pauillac, and this has the frame and density to age for decades. Highly impressive from Lilian, Melanie and Damien Barton. 60% new. - Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

2022 Langoa Barton (Saint Julien)

The first vintage produced in the estate's new winery, which more than doubled the number of vats, permitting sub-plot by sub-plot vinification, the brilliant 2022 Langoa Barton offers up aromas of dark berries, cassis, violets and cigar wrapper, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and fleshy palate endowed with terrific depth and tension. Polished and penetrating, it should match or even surpass the 2019 and 2016 vintages, and it is sure to be one of the more intelligent purchases of the en primeur campaign. - William Kelley, Wine Advocate

2022 Clos De Sarpe (Saint Emilion)

96-98 JD / 94-96 VM / 94-95 JS / 93-95 WA / 93-95 WI

Tasted on multiple occasions, the 2022 Château Clos De Sarpe is a magical Saint-Emilion in the making that's going to rank with the crème de la crème of the vintage. A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc from very old vines on the eastern side of the appellation and aging in 70% new oak, it reveals a deep purple hue to go with classic, limestone-influenced aromatics of pure cassis, graphite, chalky minerality, liquid violets, and scorched earth. Full-bodied on the palate, it has remarkable purity, a layered, balanced, seamless mouthfeel, tons of ripe tannins, and a great finish. Despite its ripeness and power, it holds onto an incredible sense of freshness (the pH is quite low). It will benefit from a decade of bottle age but will have 50 years of longevity. This estate flies far too far under that radar, and readers should do their best to latch onto a few bottles. - Jen Dunnuck
