Château Beychevelle a classic Saint-Julien, located opposite Branaire-Ducru, have just released their stunning 2022. Beychevelle's distinctive label of a sailing boat, and the very name itself, are a reference to the 17th Century owner, the Duke of Épernon, Admiral of France, for whom passing ships would lower their sales. It is typically a rich, smooth, forward Saint-Julien, that ages beautifully. Typically quite high in Merlot for the Left Bank, the 2022 comes in at 42% Merlot, and technical director Romain Duclomb believes it's the best Merlot they have ever made. It is certainly a bold, rich, brooding yet very elegant wine at this stage with beuatifully integrated tannins like cashmere. Receiving some of its highest-ever scores in barrel, fans of Beychevelle will certainly want this one!

Also released this morning from Margaux is another estate that is on top form, Château du Tertre. Named after the highest hill in Margaux on which it sits, the estate dates back to the 12th Century. However, it's only since it's purchase in 1997 by Eric Albada-Jelgersma that the wine has gained true recognition. The 2022 is an "exuberant, incredibly promising barrel sample" that William Kelley slated as one of the better values of the en primeur campaign."

"This is the 40th year I have tasted barrel samples in Bordeaux, but I have never come across anything like the 2022 vintage. It was one of the hottest and driest growing seasons in the history of France’s most famous wine region, yet it produced thousands of opulent and structured but still fresh and balanced wines. They are exciting...it was a joyous and fascinating experience to taste so many special wines. And there was high quality from top to bottom. The 2022 vintage really is something unique." - James Suckling

2022 Beychevelle (Saint Julien)

95-97+ JD / 94-96 VM / 94-96 WI / 94-95 JS / 92-94 WA / 93 JA

The 2022 Beychevelle is fabulous. In most recent vintages Beychevelle has been a flamboyant, extravagant Saint Julien, but in 2022 is its surprisingly vibrant and fresh, almost shockingly so. Ripe red cherry/plum fruit, blood orange, rose petal and spice are all beautifully delineated. More than anything, I admire the wine’s freshness and drive, qualities that have not often been present in recent vintages. That makes the 2022 one of my favorite recent vintages here. Tasted three times. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

2022 Du Tertre (Margaux)
95-96 JS / 92-94+ WA / 92-94 JD / 91-93 WI / 92 JA / 90-92 VM

The 2022 du Tertre unwinds in the glass with aromas of dark berries, plums, licorice, vine smoke and petals, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and layered palate of uncommon depth and concentration that nevertheless retains all the estate's signature elegance. Polished and supple, it's a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc, 15% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, which more or less represents this estate's varietal breakdown after its extensive replanting program is complete. This looks likely to emerge as the finest du Tertre in several decades, and it is sure to be one of the better values of the en primeur campaign. - William Kelley, Wine Advocate
