Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) have just released a "beautifully sculpted" 2022 Chateau Duhart-Milon. There has been a huge investment and a desire to produce a great Pauillac here, and this is the third vintage to be made in their brand new winery, where they can now ferment individual plots separately, allowing for greater precision and ultimately finesse. Also available is a "gorgeous" Moulin de Duhart that offers outstanding value given the pedigree and terroir.

We’ve been keeping an eye on St. Emilion's Chateau Berliquet ever since the owners of Canon & Rauzan Segla, Chanel, purchased the property in 2017. The same winemaker/technical director for those properties, Nicolas Audebert, handles the winemaking, and recent vintages have made beautiful exoressions of the excellent terroir situated right between Chateau Canon parcels. In short, this has been a winery to watch, and the 2022 is no exception!

Also from St Emilion today is a wine that bowled us over tasted from barrel, Château Monbousquet. The estate dates back to 1540, with wine production beginning in the 19th century. By 1993 the Château had fallen into disrepair and was acquired by Gerard Perse, owner of Château Pavie and Château Pavie-Decesse. Following major renovations and consultancy provided by Michel Rolland, Château Monbousquet now produces some of the most highly regarded wines from Saint-Emilion.

Possibly with the best quality to price ratio for Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé, Château Laroque have just released their "superstar" great value 2022, at less than $36/bottle with 95-97 points!

Another excellent value that caught our attention this year from Ducru Beaucaillou in Saint Julien is Le Petit Ducru.

Last but not least, a "mind-blowing" and potentially-perfect Sauternes from Lafaurie-Peyraguey...

"This is the 40th year I have tasted barrel samples in Bordeaux, but I have never come across anything like the 2022 vintage. It was one of the hottest and driest growing seasons in the history of France’s most famous wine region, yet it produced thousands of opulent and structured but still fresh and balanced wines. They are exciting...it was a joyous and fascinating experience to taste so many special wines. And there was high quality from top to bottom. The 2022 vintage really is something unique." - James Suckling

GVWM Over-Achiever & Value Drinker

The 2022 Berliquet is brilliant, bursting with aromas of plums, wild berries and lilac, followed by a medium to full-bodied, concentrated and vibrant palate that's deep and mineral. It's likely to be another of the vintage's more attractive en primeur proportions. This estate just goes from strength to strength—and that's before its new winery has been constructed! One of the most significant changes has been opting to retain higher canopies, which means that the fruiting zone of rows planted along the slope are now shaded, preserving freshness. - William Kelley, Wine Advocate

2022 Laroque (Saint Emilion)
GVWM Standout Mid-Range & Over-Achiever
95-97 JD / 93-95 WA / 93-94 JS / 92-94 VM

Clearly one of the new superstars in the appellation, Château Laroque is located on the cooler, eastern edge of Saint-Emilion and consists of pure, classic upper plateau limestone soils. The estate covers a whopping 54 hectares, which gives director Davie Suire ample flexibility when putting together the Grand Vin. Looking at the 2022 Laroque, it's a blend of 98% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc from healthy yields of 41 hectoliters per hectare, representing just 45% of the total production, and it will spend 16-18 months in 50% new French oak. This deep purple-hued beauty offers a classic Saint-Emilion bouquet of crème de cassis, graphite, tobacco, and a liquid rock-like sense of minerality. It’s medium to full-bodied, has incredible purity, and ultra-fine tannins. It’s unquestionably another beautiful vintage for this chateau that readers will love. - Jeb Dunnuck

Coming from the western side of Saint-Julien and functioning basically as a third wine of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, the 2022 Petit Ducru De Ducru-Beaucaillou is 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Petit Verdot raised in a mix of new and used barrels. A beautiful wine, it has plenty of Saint-Julien elegance and purity as well as cassis-driven fruits, notes of violet, spicy oak, and scorched earth, medium to full body, and just a silky, elegant mouthfeel. It's going to drink nicely right out of the gate. - Jeb Dunnuck

2022 Lafaurie-Peyraguey (Sauternes)

Another mind-blowing Sauternes with dense and concentrated fruit, and incredible depth and power. Spices galore. Very sweet. 260 grams residual sugar. Twice the normal year. French TBA? 95% semillon and 5% sauvignon blanc. - James Suckling

The 2022 LafauriePeyraguey has a very fragrant, floral bouquet with pure botrytised fruit, wonderful delineation and sense of mineralité. The palate is smooth and sensual, dried honey and quince, lightly spiced with a gentle crescendo on its polished and long finish. This is a very strong follow-up to the 2021. -- Neal Martin, Vinous Media
