Chambertin Clos de Beze -

The King of Wines

Jean-Baptiste Laroze started the vineyard operation in 1850. His successor, Felix Laroze had a daughter,  Suzanne who married Alexandre Drouhin in 1919, and hence the Drouhin-Laroze name was born. Six generations later, the property is still family owned and operated.

Their 1.50 hectare parcel of Chambertin Clos de Bèze was planted in 1949.

30% Whole Bunch Fermentation; 80% new wood. Intense imperial purple in colour, with supple and very dense deep fresh raspberry fruit apparent on the nose, super succulent, loaded at the front of the palate continuing right through. The fruit really spreads through to the back, and though it is ripe it stays on the cusp of red and black, with a crunch at the finish. Tasted: November 2020—Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

The 2018 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru includes 30% whole-bunch fruit, though this is the one grand cru where you cannot detect the stem addition, just the copious dark cherry, raspberry, cedar and undergrowth aromas that gain intensity in the glass. The palate is supple on the entry, the acidity neatly counterbalancing the intensity of the fruit. This Clos-de-Bèze has real grip and an arching structure on the finish, suggesting that it will be a seriously long-lived wine. Excellent.-- Neal Martin, Vinous Media

Dense black purple, the nose is really quite exciting, softly ripe of course with very dark fruit, luxurious in the mouth but the terroir still reasserts itself with a stricter precision. For a wine showing this ripeness of fruit, it has nonetheless managed to retain admirable finesse. Could be a star Tasted: November 2019 –Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy
