As the weather turns cooler and I look around for white wines that will pair perfectly with the flavors of fall, one of my go-to wines is the tasty whites of the Soave Classico region in the Veneto. During the middle part of the 20^th century, like other well-known DOC’s, Soave was expanded and there was a lot of, let’s say, "less than awesome" wine being produced. To restore the prestige of the appellation, the Soave Classico DOC was created from the historic original area, and the much higher quality wines from the hillsides and historic vineyard sites received the recognition they deserve.

The Calvarino vineyard is situated in the heart of the Soave Classico zone and is the ancient cornerstone of the Pieropan family vineyards, bought in 1901. The name derives from ‘Little Calvary’ referring to the difficulties in working the land and the tortuously winding path to the bottom. The wine is 70% Garganega, and 30% Trebbiano di Soave, and just about perfect with the flavors of the upcoming holiday season!
