Benjamin Leroux was born in 1975 in Beaune, not to a vigneron family, yet decided in his teens that wine was what he wanted to do. After his enology studies, he worked at Cos d'Estournel in Bordeaux, Domaine Drouhin in Oregon, Louis Jadot in Beaune, and Comte Armand in Pommard, where he was named technical director and manager at the age of 24. He remained at Comte Armand for 15 vintages. In 2007, he founded his own domaine and négoce. |

2022 Benjamin Leroux Chambertin Grand Cru

Medium to deep purple. A little bacon note from the barrel. But then the fruit takes the upper hand, with the restrained completeness which makes a Chambertin. Amazing intensity behind, lifted through 80% whole bunch vinification, with an ethereal finish that still keeps its feet on the ground. Very fine and with excellent length. Drink from 2032. The 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru has a discrete bouquet that blossoms in the glass with pure red berry fruit, dried flowers and crushed stone. Brilliant delineation. The palate is beautifully balanced with filigree tannins, so poised and focused, with a real peacock's tail on the finish. Leroux's best red? Quite possibly. -- Neal Martin

Tasting note: This is also quite firmly reduced and unreadable at present. Otherwise, there is an exceptionally fine texture to the highly energetic, if not necessarily a monster of concentration, larger-bodied flavors that brim with minerality on the balanced, austere and hugely long finish that is like rolling a small pebble around the mouth. Once again note that my recommendation for the initial drinking window reflects the large format bottling. I would add that should you be fortunate enough to find a magnum, it's definitely a 'buy and forget you own it' Chambertin. Don't Miss.--Allen Meadows, Burghound |

Tasting note: Subtle though still easily perceptible wood frames ripe and very fresh aromas of white peach, pear, bee's wax, acacia blossom and a lovely array of spice elements. The larger-bodied and admirably concentrated flavors possess a gorgeous texture that is quite sleek while exhibiting outstanding power on the strikingly long finale that is presently very tightly wound. This marvelous effort is a 'buy and forget you own it' Bâtard, and especially so in magnum format. Don't Miss! --Allen Meadows, Burghound |

The Bâtard is still in barrel, without any sulphur adjustment, so in fact needs refreshing which will happen, especially when it goes into tank. Primrose colour, ripe pears with some passion fruit. A significant wealth of fruit but the final wine is not easy to be sure of at this stage. Clean pure fruit returns, not so obvious acidity. This wine is likely to develop better than it is currently showing. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted Oct 2023.--Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy
