An over-performing Pessac-Leognan 2nd wine made next door to Haut Brion and La Mission from a unique vineyard landlocked in the city of Bordeaux

Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion - Luxe Adventure Traveler

A Pessac Leognan property that has been “firing on all cylinders” of late, Chateau Les Carmes Haut Brion is located right in Pessac (across from Haut Brion). The property changed hands in 2011 and has undergone extensive upgrades including a massive renovation of the winemaking facilities and an expansion of vineyard holdings. It has been farmed Organically since 2009 and has the highest proportion of Cabernet Franc on the Left Bank, at around 45% of plantings, with the rest 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot, set across two gravel, clay and sandy soil slopes. The wines are now better than ever, and a good rule to follow is to purchase the 2nd wines of top estates in great vintages!

"An estate I have championed for many years now, and watched as its reputation has grown. It deserves all the plaudits, both for making great wines and also having the courage to stand out for its own distinct personality and winemaking choices.” - Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

Beautiful fragrance to the nose, perfumed and delicate yet so expressive, nothing out of balance with cherries and violets bursting out of the glass. Gorgeous smooth mouthfeel with some milk chocolate dusting on the fruit, tannins are delicate and softly mouth filling with a lovely salinity to the palate - creamy and unctuous but at the same time there's lots of acidity. This has a verticality to it, layered but with an aerial quality too, the flavours just glide across the palate with lift on the finish - so satisfying and drinkable. Just a glorious, shining, bright, velvety, succulent glass of wine. Pure elegance. - Georgina Hindle, Decanter

A blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot, the 2019 Le C des Carmes Haut-Brion was made with 28% whole-bunch fermentation and has a pH of 3.7. It rolls effortlessly out of the glass with open scents of black cherries, cassis, and juicy blackberries with suggestions of clove oil, wild sage, and underbrush. Medium-bodied, delicately styled, and with a beautiful quiet intensity, it has plush tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing earthy. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent

A succulent and savory young wine with fine and polished tannins that start well and finish very long. Medium body with chocolate, hazelnut, plum and wet-leaf flavors. Lasts a long time on the finish. Delicious now, but better after 2021. - James Suckling

The 2017 Le “C” des Carmes Haut-Brion was picked from 20 September to 3 October, with 13° alcohol. It is matured in 30% new oak, 60% one-year and 10% amphora. It has a very perfumed, quite generous bouquet with wild strawberry, vanilla pod, blueberry and subtle damp clay aromas. The palate conveys a fine sense of energy on the entry. Then it delivers very edgy, almost chalky tannin that frame the dark berry fruit, hints of brown spice and a typically reduced finish that indicates this will require four or five years in bottle. Very fine. - Neal Martin, Vinous Media

This show so much effusive ripe fruit with cherries and strawberries. Lightly jammy. Full-bodied and slightly chewy, yet with so much fruit and brightness. Delicious now, but give it two or three years to open. Second wine of Carmes. Try after 2023. - James Suckling
