"Unusual, but I love it...a little like Nebbiolo"
- Luis Gutierrez, The Wine Advocate

Raul Perez is undoubtedly one of the world’s most highly-respected winemakers. His family has been tending vines in the Bierzo appellation literally for centuries, and his wines are some of the reference points and benchmarks for the region. Although Perez is humble about his skills, the wines speak for themselves as a testament to his winemaking prowess.

This is the first time I have tasted La Vitoriana from Ultreia, and the 2019 Ultreia La Vitoriana is the first vintage produced. It is from the north side of the same vineyard produced by Castro Ventosa. There are only two barrels of this, and he decided to keep it apart. It's from very old vines and has freshness and a touch of rusticity. It fermented in a 700-liter amphora and matured in used barrel. This might be a little unusual, but I love it. It feels very complex, with abundant tannins, a little like Nebbiolo and in need of time in bottle. It's wild and full of character. This is one of the grand crus from Valtuille.-- Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate

It's not clear which vintage is better for the Ultreia range, as it depends on the wine. I think the 2019 Ultreia El Rapolao is better than the 2020, perhaps because it's from a warmer and riper year, when this wine tends to behave better. This is juicy, round and complete, with abundant, very fine tannins and the balance and stuffing to develop nicely in bottle. 1,500 bottles produced.-- Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate

2020 Raul Perez La Vizcaína El Rapolao

There is more freshness in the 2020 La Vizcaína El Rapolao, where I even found notes of eucalyptus. It's medium-bodied and has fine tannins, very tasty and balanced. There are two new plots in 2020, so they produced some 7,500 bottles. He wants to reach 20,000 bottles here, and there will be a white Rapolao from a plot that he planted with Godello.--Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate

The nose of the 2019 Ultreia Saint Jacques is nothing short of spectacular. It shows the varietal character and the juicy and round style of the Valtuille vineyards. It's harmonious, clean and expressive. They are using more and more stems with long macerations, malolactic in tanks and aging in 30% oak vats (he purchased from Alión) and 70% of the wine in used 225-liter oak barrels for one year. There is only one master blend, which is put into oak vats and bottled by 25,000- to 30,000-bottle lots. In 2019 he produced 110,000 bottles of this wine.—Luiz Gutierrez, The Wine Advocate

2020 Raul Perez Ultreia Godello

$26.89/bottle (In Stock) Buy Now

2020 was a very good year for whites, and they harvested very early. The 2020 Ultreia Godello shows restraint and very low pH (3.2!) with high acidity (6.6 to 6.8). None of the whites go through malolactic, and this is the freshest vintage of this wine so far. This is now made with mostly own grapes from Cacabelos and Ponferrada (in 2022 they will own around 80% of the vineyards used for this wine), matured in a mixture of barriques, oak foudres and some concrete. It's super tasty, mineral and finishes dry. There are some 30,000 bottles of this wine.-Luis Gutierrez, The Wine Advocate
