An Epic Vintage for Zind Humbrecht

2019 is a great vintage! The crop size allowed to reach perfect skin ripeness levels, not too quickly, and a beautiful harmony between sugar and acidity. The domaine average 31hl/ha on the Grands Crus vineyards and 40hl/ha for the Alsace category including single-vineyards. Fermentations were very slow to finish, often needing a full year to become dry, especially for the Riesling grape. Higher acidity and lower pH would often be the main explanation. The wines in 2019 express concentration, structure, refinement and are worthy of cellaring.   -Domaine Zind Humbrecht

This dry riesling masterpiece is full of seeming contradictions that give it a sense of mystery you very rarely find. So rich and concentrated, yet also astonishingly vivid and precise, the aromas range from smoke to roses, although the most obvious note is the peachy one up front. Breathtakingly long and complete finish with so much mineral complexity. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. –James Suckling

A giant of minerality with enormous structure, this also delights you with the stunningly ripe apricot and pineapple fruit that’s wrapped around its dense core. This will surely only get better for many years to come, as it slowly reveals its deep riches. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but better from 2023.-James Suckling

It sounds corny, but this really tastes of an abundance of sunshine, with super-ripe pineapple character. That’s beautifully supported by the mineral acidity, which keeps this as straight as a laser beam. Very polished finish that’s incredibly bright. First vintage of this wine! From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. –James Suckling

It’s hard to resist the fragrant bouquet of apricot and orange blossom! This is very dense and concentrated with very intense, chalky minerality, yet it remains so graceful and the very long finish shows wonderful silkiness that pulls you back for more. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

With its cornucopia of yellow fruit, floral notes and wet-stone character, this is at once fleshy and enormously structured. Nothing opulent or warm about it at all, though. In fact, the very long finish is decisively cool. You really need some time to take in this embarrassment of riches! From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. –James Suckling

There’s a lot of discussion about “noble austerity“ in wine, but those wines are often just a bit hard. This has a certain mineral austerity, but it is welded to the ripest of citrus aromas and breathtaking vibrancy. Although this already makes an impressive statement, the core is so tightly packed that it will show even better after some time to unwind. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but better from 2022. James Suckling

This is a massively concentrated and enormously structured wine with so much smoke and spice, but there’s also so much rose aroma that it comes off as charming rather than imposing. And the giant freshness at the finish pulls you back for more of this astonishing gewurz. Beautifully integrated touch of sweetness. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. –James Suckling

There’s nothing obvious about this intensely spicy gewurz. In fact, studying the aromas is like solving an intricate puzzle. Very powerful and creamy with succulent tropical-fruit character, the bold minerality balancing the touch of sweetness. The palate is no less intriguing, thanks to the cool depths that are ever more revealed on the very refined finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. –James Suckling

Gewurz can be an impressive but tiring wine. With its floral delicacy and lively, graceful personality, this is the opposite of the bombastic norm. The touch of sweetness stays in the background and the floral freshness wins out at the long, precise finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. –James Suckling

So spicy and smoky with a hint of mushroom, this is an enormously deep and concentrated dry pinot gris that’s just beginning to open up. With some aeration, ripe melon character is added to the expansive picture. Tons of spice at the imposing, dry finish and just a hint of raisin. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but better from 2023. –James Suckling

2019 Zind Humbrecht PInot Gris Rotenberg

95 James Suckling

This self-confidently atypical pinot gris has astonishing acidity that’s got the intensity of a lightning strike. Tons of pineapple and toast character, but also gigantic, lemony freshness at the exceptionally bright finish. May be too extreme for some, but we find this amazing. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. -James Suckling
