This is an entrant in the new age-indicated category of 50; it no longer stops at 40.I thought the 50 Year white was fabulous. Its Tawny brother is as good or better.--Mark Squires, The Wine Advocate

NV Kopke 50 Year Colheita Port

The NV 50-Year-Old Tawny Port was bottled in May 2022 with 134 grams of residual sugar and a bar-top cork. This is an entrant in the new age-indicated category of 50; it no longer stops at 40. I thought the 50 Year white was fabulous. Its Tawny brother is as good or better. It doesn't have the brightness of the white in terms of acidity (the fruit doesn't taste old in terms of decay, so don't misunderstand), but it is richer, lusher and more flavorful. There's a touch of nuts, caramel and spice. It also has a long, long finish, which is what I would expect from an old Tawny in top form. Kopke did a great job with the blend here. This is completely delicious, smooth and balanced, juicy on the finish. Which is better? Depends on what you like, and it is worth getting some of each. For wines this old, the prices are reasonable. They are both great experiences.-Mark Squires, The Wine Advocate

Lovely deep red-tinged mahogany colour. Beautifully lifted and aromatic on the nose, just a touch of singed crocante with dried fruit, roasted chestnuts and toasted almonds. Wonderfully lithe, creamy-textured fruit on the palate, with greengage freshness plus the sweetness of an Elvas plum (160g/l residual sugar). Mesmerisingly persistent sugar and spice (and all things nice) on the finish.--Richard Mayson, Decanter

Cask sample. Hand-picked traditional Douro varieties, crushed and fermented in lagares at between 28 and 30 °C until the right degree of sweetness is achieved. Aged on average 50 years in cask. TA 5.64 g/l, pH 3.4, RS 140 g/l.

Dark ochre-brown colour, no red colour left here. Even more savoury than the 50 Years Old White port with equally complex aromas but less orange. Figs and prunes soaked in alcohol (though not as sweet as pruneaux d’Agen), polished wood, walnuts, with the spiciness of sotolon. The alcohol seems to show a little more on the nose than it does with the 50 Years Old white port, and the flavour is dominated by walnuts wrapped in bitter toffee and just a hint of coffee on the finish, where there is also a little more obvious sweetness. Rich, super-intense, beautifully balanced with just enough freshness for a complete wine. More elegant than its white twin, the texture less viscous even though the RS level is higher. Absolutely gorgeous. --(JH), Jancis Robinson

2008 Royal Tokaji Essencia

(In red lacquered box with crystal spoon)

The 2009 Tokaji Essencia comes in 1,386 individual red lacquer hand-crafted boxes containing a 375ml bottle and an obligatory hand-blown glass spoon, which is not there for decorative purposes. It does enhance imbibement, allowing that enormous hit of sucrosity to land straight on the tongue instead of clinging to the sides of your mouth or gums. It has a surprisingly bashful nose for the first 12 hours. Whereas some burst from the glass, this chooses to unfurl and only as if toying with you, gradually reveals scents of fresh fig, Medjool dates, Seville orange marmalade and Clementines. I notice that the aromatics blossom on the second day as it deftly slips into fifth gear. The palate also meliorates, obviously unctuous and yet paradoxically weightless thanks to that acidity. Again, fig features prominently allied with marmalade, demerara and quince, more desiccated orange peel and syrup towards the harmonious finish. Wonderful precision throughout, this magnificent Essencia that will outlast you and I. Neal Martin, Vinous Media

Collection of 6 Bottles Containing: 1 x Les Carelles 1 x La Cote Faron 1 x Le Bout du Clos 1 x Les Chantereines 1 x Sous le Mont 1 x Chemin de Chalons

Anselme Selosse’s wines are among the most coveted bottles in Champagne. In recent years, Selosse’s lieu-dit Champagnes have ascended into the realm of the nearly unobtainable because of their tiny production. Two of the lieux-dits are sold only as part of the 300 or so boxed sets that are released each year, which makes tasting all six Champagnes together virtually impossible. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
