2016 Vietti Barolo Riserva Villero

This is only the 15th vintage ever released since it was first produced with the 1982 vintage. As always, this wine comes with its unique ‘Etichetta d'Autore’ - for the Villero 2016, the artwork on the label was created by the Irish photographer Richard Mosse.

Richard Mosse explains the creation of this artwork as follows:

In 2011, I made multiple trips to the APCLS armed group (Alliance des patriotes pour un Congo libre et souverain) in Lukweti, North Kivu, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. I was a kind of artist in residence with them. They collaborated with me, acting out simulated battles and maneuvers for my camera. This rebel is playing dead for the camera. I took the photo with an 8x10" camera loaded with Kodak Aerochrome infrared sheet film. But halfway through the trip, I unwittingly mixed up the exposed and unexposed sheets of film. When I returned to New York, I discovered my error after processing the film. Thinking my work was ruined, I never looked at the negatives again until now, a dozen years later. An image I took of the magma lake inside Mount Nyiragongo (an active volcano in North Kivu) was imprinted onto the chest of this portrait of the soldier.

Complex aromas and flavors of cherry, raspberry, rose, wild herbs, stony mineral and autumn woods are the hallmarks of this elegant red, which is beginning to reveal all of its facets yet is still structured. Leaves a chalky feel of refined tannins on the long finish. Best from 2026 through 2045. 370 cases made, 60 cases imported.--Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator

The 2016 Barolo Riserva Villero is a dense, packed wine. Black cherry, plum, licorice, leather and incense add to an impression of brooding, virile intensity. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2016 clearly needs time. Even so, my belief remains what it has always been—that Villero is not the best vineyard in the Vietti range. That is even more apparent today, given the new sites that have been added to the range. The logic of making the estate's Riserva, theoretically the estate's top wine, from this site has always escaped me. That is more true today than ever, given the elite sites Vietti has added to their range in recent years. -- Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
