Markus Molitor has become synonymous with superb quality up and down a rather massive range of wines. 2019 is a special vintage, and like the superb 1990 vintage, a bounty of wines were produced that will the be the new benchmarks in Riesling. For those folks unfamiliar with the abbreviations, GRK (Green Capsule) GK (Gold Capsule) and WK (White Capsule).The asterisks notate what the producer believes to be a superior wine and is often more intense.

The 2019 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese *** (Green Capsule) opens enormously deep, intense and complex on the nose that immediately indicates the wine is in an exceptional class on its own. Only with lots of aeration does the wine become more and more pure and fresh and develop a flinty lemon note with the finest perfume. On the palate, this is a rich, round and complex, sweet, wide and mouth-filling, very generous, free and easy-flowing Himmelreich of exceptional finesse and beauty. The finish is so stimulating, salty, pure and crunchy in its slate character, whereas the crater dug by the piquancy is filled in by the perfectly ripe and healthy fruit with lush intensity. Partly from the Felsentreppe, the 2019 Erdener Treppchen Auslese *** (White Capsule) opens with a pure, fresh and flinty, iron-rich and refined bouquet of tropical fruit aromas with notes of broken (red) slate, lemon oil and lemon juice. Fat but refined, this wine combines the incompatible. Round and wide as well as precise and piquant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, rich and concentrated yet powerful, vibrantly fresh and persistently salty Riesling with cognac or whisky features due its oaky and iodine character. Highly vital and salty, very elegant and complex, vibrantly fresh, with seriously firm tannin grip and a generous tropical stone fruit aroma, this is a giant in the making, but it needs some years to celebrate its class. The 2019 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese (Golden Capsule) AP 22 opens with an intense, highly refined and flinty bouquet of crushed slate and a dramatic, complex, slightly reductive terroir tone that is reminiscent of iodine, iron and quartz (even though nothing of these elements can be found in the Sonnenuhr). Enormously lush and concentrated on the refined palate, this Spätlese develops salty finesse with ripe, highly delicate acidity and serious structure. This is a very intense, ripe, densely textured, absolutely gorgeous Spätlese that has come from Molitor’s most important vineyard since 1986. The 2019 Graacher Domprobst Kabinett (White Capsule) is deep, elegant and flinty on the perfectly ripe and typically Graach-fruity nose with its lush and ripe stone-fruit aromas. Water matters in a dry year such as 2019, and the Domprobst has lots of it. Dense, piquant and mouth-filling on the palate, the wine reveals an edgy slate structure that will soften with bottle age.
