A Pair of Gems from Petrolo
Val dâArno di Sopra, Tuscany
Up to 96 points, under $40 and In Stock
In 1716 Cosimo III de Medici, Great Duke of Tuscany, stated with an edict which areas had the most valuable productions of fine wine and quality olive oil. This edict recognized 4 areas, Chianti center (between Panzano and Greve), Carmignano (west of Florence), Pomino (east of Florence) and the Val dâArno di Sopra (the western and eastern hills along the Arno River between Florence and Arezzo, where Petrolo belongs). The Val d'Arno di Sopra DOC allows for not only Sangiovese but Cabernet and Merlot, which all grow on the estate of Petrolo.
Bòggina was born from a dream, the dream of Eng. Gastone Bazzocchi, grandfather of the current owners and founder of Petrolo in 1947, when he planted this Sangiovese vineyard between 1951 and 1952. Bòggina C is their âGrand-Cruâ of Sangiovese and it is undoubtedly the best vineyard of Sangiovese of Petrolo, both for the extremely favorable pedoclimate conditions and for its intrinsic beauty.
Torrione is the âchateauâ of Petrolo, a blend of the grapes of all the vineyards of Petrolo: not only Sangiovese from Bòggina but also from other historical vineyards of Petrolo, including Merlot from Galatrona and Cabernet Sauvignon from Campo Lusso. A perfect example of a balanced, clear and deep red. A wine that tells, better than any other, the true identity of their territory.

The 2018 Bòggina C (Bòggina Classico) is another superb wine from Petrolo. Here, Sangiovese is aged in oak, which gives the wine more mid-palate depth and broader shoulders, which, frankly, the wine seems to benefit from. Dark cherry, licorice, leather, spice and menthol build as the 2018 shows everything its got. Impressive. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

A red with plenty of blackberry, black-olive, floral and oyster-shell character. Itâs full-bodied, yet layered, extremely polished and beautiful. A dusty texture. Hazelnut and walnut undertones. From organically grown grapes. A little more merlot and cabernet sauvignon in the blend. Gorgeous now, but better after 2021 and onwards. - James Suckling
