From a vineyard that belongs to and is farmed and vinified by Bründlmayer’s son Vincent, this displays positive reduction in the nose in the form of nettle-like prickle, struck-flint pungency and sweet-smoky machine oil, these elements nicely complementing the cress, brown-spiced melon rind and tobacco displayed on a palpably dense yet juicily appley palate. The finish is energizing and engaging, invigoratingly peppery, and veritably seethes with smoky underlying savor. Expect it to continue becoming more expressive, as it has in its first year since bottling. Typically, the Bründlmayers will kick off fermentation with doses of some wine that has started up early and begun working smoothly through its sugar, but this wine fermented spontaneously, although they report that it was a rather long wait before that commenced. - David Schildknecht, Vinous Media
