We all remember the inside joke in the movie “Sideways” that the protagonist Miles disdains Merlot, but whose favorite wine of all time is the Merlot based Cheval Blanc. Sideways did not kill Merlot, but it did boost Pinot Noir, especially in California. And to be fair, his hatred was directed at the explosion of Merlot in California, and there was a lot that was not good.

But Merlot is good, in fact it can be epic. From the ancestral home of Bordeaux, this offspring of Cabernet Franc (and half-sibling to Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere) produces many wines of distinction. Often blended with Cab France, or a little Cab Sauv, this is the grape the blackbirds loved so much it took on their name (“Merle”).

To Celebrate International Merlot Day, I thought we could highlight a few offerings from the Right Bank of Bordeaux. A little Pomerol, some Saint-Emilion, and few great everyday bottles that are in stock.
