Sometimes you stumble across an amazing bottle that is just hiding in plain sight. When I spotted this Barolo from a benchmark vintage, I knew I'd found a gem. The Mosconi vineyard, just east of Monforte dâAlba in the southern part of the Barolo appellation, is considered one of the great Crus of the area, and the wines from 2015 like this one are so classic in their makeup. Red fruits, black cherries, earthiness and fine tannins. And so young that they are just barely coming into their prime. We donât have a ton of this wine, but then again only about 750 cases were made. Not quite ready to drink, but sooner or later this should be an amazing addition to your cellar.
The E. Pira winery has roots in the 1800s, and ârock starâ winemaker Chiara Boschisâ family history in wine goes back to 1761. In 1981, Chiara, though still studying in Turin, convinced her mother and father to purchase the E Pira cantina and vineyards. In 1990 she took over the reins, and in contrast to her familyâs centuries of traditional winemaking, she took a daring and provocative path, employing green harvesting, shorter fermentations, and the use of small French oak barriques. Her very first wine, 1990 Barolo Riserva Cannubi, was a smash hit. She earned the coveted Tre Bicchieri award from the Gambero Rosso in Italy, and international attention soon followed.
2009 was the first release of Chiaraâs single vineyard Mosconi Barolo, from 3 hectares of old vines at 400 meters above sea level, with an annual average production of about 800 cases.
In her vineyards, Chiara has always worked without chemical fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides, preferring the sustainable path of integrated pest management. The 2014 vintage was her first as certified organic, and she started a project called Cannubi Bio, and as of 2015, had convinced 80% of the 26 growers in Cannubi to work organically.
