Chateau Lafleur: Vineyard, Winemaking, Best Wines (2022)

Owned and managed by the Guinaudeau family, Lafleur is located in the heart of the Pomerol plateau opposite Pétrus, and it produces wines of comparable quality. The tiny 4.5-hectare vineyard dates back to 1872 and is situated on the gravel-rich Pomerol plateau adjoining those of Lafleur-Pétrus. The soils here are particularly deep and are enriched by deposits of potassium and iron. Only natural fertilizers are used and yields are painfully low, even by Pomerol standards. The chateau's modest exterior (compared to estates on the Left Bank) belies the breathtaking nature of the wines made there - it has long been regarded as one of the world's greatest wines.

We are thrilled to offer this selection of aged vintages and large formats, all with excellent provenance.

Harmonious, supple and very generous, full-bodied, with ripe tannins; perfect to enjoy now but it should last, it's almost black in color and explodes with cassis and green olive aromas and flavors.--Château Lafleur vertical. - Wine Spectator

As it is my birth year, I enjoyed two or three encounters with the 1971 Lafleur before. To be honest, it is not as good as one might expect given that Pomerol excelled in this vintage. It has a leathery nose with dried flowers and sometimes an unwanted geranium note. The palate is fresh and balanced, uncomplicated and winsome, underpinned by expressive Cabernet Franc towards the finish. - Neal Martin, Vinous Media

1994 (1.5L) $1250 - Buy Now

Still backward, but one of the great successes of the vintage, the 1994 still has a deep ruby/purple color, notes of plums, a hint of prunes, earth, truffle, and mineral. As the wine sits in the glass, some of the steely mineral Lafleur character emerges. This remains an excruciatingly tannic, backward, medium to full-bodied wine that needs plenty of cellaring. I am not so sure the tannins will always mesh, given the fact that this wine does not quite have the concentration that some of the other top vintages of Lafleur possess. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025. Last tasted, 12/02. - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate

1995 (750ml) $900 - Buy Now

A '95 that exploded in the glass in contact with air. Solid and masculine, with dark chocolate and bitter mocha notes, there's big intensity here. While the tannins are burly for now, the aromas keep coming--rose petal, violet and currant backed by creamy, vanilla bean character. Elegant finish.--Château Lafleur vertical. Best from 2005 through 2015. 1,000 cases made. Wine Spectator
