The 2013 Barolo Via Nuova is the most tannic and explosive of these three Barolos. The flavors are dark, powerful and intense throughout. Beams of searing tannin and vibrant, pointed acidity wrap around the virile, imposing finish. Readers will have to be patient with the 2013, as it is likely to be slow to mature in bottle. Even so, the purity of the flavors and textures is compelling. Antonio Galloni

This is all about fruit defined by a purity and clarity that I really appreciate. Full body, a deep, and dense palate and a long and flavorful finish. Needs three or four years to soften, but what a beauty already. Best Via Nuova ever. James Suckling

Previously a single cru, as of 2009 Via Nuova is a blend of vineyards in Liste and Terlo in Barolo, Gabutti and Baudana in Serralunga d'Alba, and Mosconi in Monforte d'Alba. It spends two years in a combination of French oak botti and barrique, 20% new. It is dripping with mineral, rosemary and mint characters, with smoky undertones - a compact wine with authoritative yet sophisticated tannins. Subtleties will be revealed as it sheds some of its impressive youthful power. – Michaela Morris, Decanter

The 2013 Barolo Via Nuova is a more accessible wine with ripe and round fruit flavors that lift gracefully from the glass. The bouquet is immediately open and articulate. Fruit is sourced from six vineyards spread across three townships: Barolo (Terlo and Liste), Monforte d'Alba (Ravera and Mosconi) and Serralunga d'Alba (Gabutti and Baudana). Each one, averaging only half a hectare in size, adds a little piece of the puzzle. In the future, the idea is to increase the percentage of Mosconi fruit to bring total bottle production from 4,000 to around 6,000. The wine is ample and generous in terms of its aromatic intensity with bold fruit, spice and balsam herb. The finish is dry and marked by distant mineral flavors. - Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Broad and spicy, offering cherry, leather, earth and tobacco notes wrapped in sweet spices. Muscular tannins move in on the finish. Best from 2022 through 2042. - Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator
