Bernard & Thierry Glantenay Volnay Santenots 1er Cru 2015 (750ML)

The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru shows a lot of reduction on the nose that makes the fruit and terroir difficult to read at the moment. The palate probably indicates the potential more than the aromatics, offering brambly red and black fruit, a sprinkle of white pepper and hints of dried orange peel toward the refined, persistent finish. Thierry oppines that he harvested his holdings in Santenots (planted in 1966) just a few days later than he might have liked to, and it is his only wine which shows less than pitch-perfect ripeness. The result is a rich, opulent and decidedly gourmand rendition of this sometimes firm and four-square terroir, introduced by a bouquet of ripe black cherry, cassis and graphite, framed by ripe, supple tannins. - William Kelley, Decanter

30% new oak (maximum). No whole bunch because (a) it generally makes a rich, tannic wine, and (b) he had early ripening and already some grapes were shrivelling so he didn’t want to take the risk. 

Blackish crimson. Suave, pungent nose. Quite jagged fruit flavours – really punchy and all-out! Not much subtlety… But it should all come right in the end. For those who want a fairly obvious hit? Still youthful, even a little raw! Lots to chew on. Jancis Robinson.com
