The 2015 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru reveals an attractive bouquet of red and black cherries, rose petal, wild berries and cassis, with comparatively little evidence of its time in new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, rich and ample, with a lavish attack, supple tannins, juicy acids and excellent sap on the finish. My only reservation is that this seems to be surprisingly giving and structurally open-knit for a young Mazis-Chambertin, but in this vintage of wines for the long haul, that may be no bad thing. Tasting note: The wood treatment is less subtle here and while it doesn't fight with the menthol-inflected red and black cherry, earth and animale-scented aromas, it's close to doing just that. On the plus side there is outstanding power and mid-palate density to the intense and tautly muscular flavors that possess first-rate complexity on the driving and hugely long finish. This is very firm yet there is so much dry extract present that this should not only be able to successfully integrate the oak but may also be approachable after only 7 to 8 years of bottle age.
