One of the finest over-achieving efforts in this vintage as well as a best buy for a top-flight St.-Julien, this 2008 is an irresistible success. It reveals an opaque ruby/purple color, lots of unctuosity and a boatload of sweet cassis and black cherry fruit intertwined with notions of licorice, smoke and oak. Full-bodied, remarkably concentrated and stunningly pure and textured, this sensational wine is already drinking well, and will be even better with 2-3 years of cellaring. It should last for 20-25 years. Bravo! Robert Parker, Wine Advocate

The 2008 Léoville-Poyferré has a well-defined, quite precise and energetic bouquet with blackberry, raspberry and pencil lead aromas. This is very focused and engaging. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, graphite and pencil box aromas, harmonious in the mouth with a long and refined finish. What a fabulous Saint Julien from Didier Cuvelier, one that satiates the senses (and then some). (Tasted at BI Wine & Spirit’s annual 10-Year On tasting.)

I am impressed with the fruit and velvety tannins. Full and deliciously fruity with soft tannins and rich fruit. Blueberry. Open and gorgeous. Impressive for the vintage. - James Suckling

Poyferré is always an extremely interesting detour from the more classical offerings of the Léoville plateau. There is a plush power to this, the fruit is polished and richer, and ten years seems to still be right at the beginning of its life. This is a St-Julien for the hedonists rather than the cerebral, but its elegance and graphite gravel breeding is clear - you still have the most lovely sense of being pulled up on the almost saline finish, without sacrificing persistency. It's a lovely, generous vintage at this estate. Drinking Window 2018 - 2035. Jane Anson, Decanter

This is a really fruity wine thats opulent and gorgeously rich. There is a pepper edge, touches of new wood and a firm, dark core. Acidity and concentration are already integrated. Drink from 2018. Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast

Savoury, dark and serious. Plenty of fibrous tannin. Smoke and blackcurrant flavour. Traditional, powerful structure with modern, ripe fruit - a great combination. - Richard Hemming MW, JancisRobinson.com
