A beautifully sited vineyard planted 1948 located just below the ‘heart’ of Clos de la Roche. Often very close to Grand cru in quality and depth.
The 2013 Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru Faconnières comes from 70-year-old vines and includes 50% whole-cluster fruit. It has a more understated bouquet compared to Virgile’s other ‘13s from the appellation, but don’t be fooled: this has superb delineation and focus, real mineralité underneath those broody black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin – an overarching structure here with a dash of black pepper judiciously sprinkled over the dense, fresh and vibrant finish. This is a superb example from the appellation and one of the domaine’s finest contributions to the vintage. –Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate
Note: from 60+ year old vines, 50% whole cluster
Tasting note: There is just enough wood present to warrant commenting on as it frames the softly reduced nose so I would strongly recommend decanting this if you're tempted for some reason to try a bottle young. The beautifully intense medium weight plus flavors retain a fine sense of delineation on the powerful yet focused finale that delivers superb length on the ever-so-slightly austere and very firm finale. I very much like this decidedly old school effort that should amply repay extended cellaring. One to look for provided that you have the patience to allow it at least 7 to 8 years of age.
