Second vintage on the Place for this excellent wine. Clever construction, with fine tannins and a savoury quality to the fruit that makes it so drinkable. Intensely fragrant, wild strawberries, madarin peel, dried roses, smoked earth and underbrush. You could go for this now, but it will also improve with further ageing. Has an unhurried seduction about it, with an inching-forward slate texture that hugs the palate and pulls you along with it. So good. Winemaker Gionata Puglignani, owners Mazzei family. The Mazzei 2020 Concerto di Fonterutoli is a blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon from a cool vineyard site located at 350 meters in elevation. It is surrounded by thick forests on three sides. The role of the forest especially in the hills of Chianti is becoming ever more appreciated as we face hot summers and climate change. This wine remains focused and tight with wild berry, blackcurrant, grilled herb, spice and dark mineral tones. The 2020 Concerto di Fonterutoli is bright and punchy, with terrific freshness and tons of nuance. Plum, pomegranate, spice, new leather and blood orange are front and center. A deep, serious, brooding nose, full of dried herbs and scrubland notes with pepper spice and blackcurrants - a savoury expression. High acidity fills the mouth giving succulent and juicy red and black fruit flavours, bright, vibrant and lively. Quite direct right now, all in a straight line, driving from start to finish. This has some nuance from the spiced edges but it's so immediately generous and expansive. Lots of power here, there is concentration and structure, clear depth with a rich appeal.
