Time in a Bottle

Hard-to-find Barolo from the Past

‘45, ‘64, ’83 and the ‘90s

Wine can capture a place. The rolling hills of Tuscany, the stony soils of Chateauneuf, the moors of Pomerol. Or in this case, the fog shrouded hilltops of the Langhe, around the villages that make the wines of Barolo. And when we are lucky, wine can capture time. Not just the weather, the winemaker’s art, or the style of the day. But sometimes wine really just captures “time”. We are lucky to have access to a few bottles of Barolo from decades gone by. All of these are of the highest providence and are currently being held at our chateau in Bordeaux.

These are extremely limited, and extremely rare. Photos available upon request. Also see below for links to our other offerings from years gone by.

1945 Giacomo Conterno Barolo

$995.00 (750ml)- 1 Bottle Available Pre-Arrival- Buy Now

War era Barolos are incredibly hard to find. Today it is virtually impossible to imagine what conditions must have been like in Piedmont during this period, not just because of politics, but because in the 1940s Piedmont was very poor and much more agrarian than it is today. The 1945 Barolo was pure, sweet and ethereal…still quite pretty and certainly memorable. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

1964 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo

$799.00 (750ml)- 1 Bottle Available Pre-Arrival- Buy Now

Bartolo Mascarello’s 1964 Barolo was initially quite funky and rustic, it needed several hours of air to open up. When it did, it was a fantastic wine that captured the essence of this warm vintage in its ripe fruit and generous, enveloping personality. The 1964 is not one of the most complex or profound Mascarello Barolos, but this bottle provided plenty of enjoyment. AG, Vinous Media

1964 Giacomo Conterno Barolo

$499.00 (750ml)- 2 Bottles Available Pre-Arrival- Buy Now

The 1964 Barolo shows more fruit, depth and richness, with sweet mentholated notes that add complexity to the spiced fruit…fully mature. - AG, Vinous Media
