You know I love my Italian wines, and when great vintages come they inevitably must go away at some point. We are now seeing the last of the 2015 and 2016 bottles that we can get, and we found a few gems! The single vineyard Brunello from Val di Suga called Poggio al Granchio (literally “hill of the crab") gets its name from a very small pond in the center of the property, under an imposing holm oak, where there are nice and lively freshwater crabs inside. It's a wonderful expression of the place that is typically the most distinctive offering from their 3 single vineyard Brunelli.

And if you have not experienced the wines of Dal Forno Romano, they are to be savored.  Amarone is called a “wine of contemplation”, and his versions have so much power, depth and are just plain huge! The few bottles of Valpolicella we have are almost more like most wineries’ Ripassa, or nearly their Amarone.  These are bottles to enjoy on those cold dark winter nights, or to save away in your cellar for another time.

These are all limited to what we were lucky to get, in stock and ready for you!

2016 Val di Suga Brunello di Montalcino

Poggio al Granchio

Poggio al Granchio is sourced from high elevations of 400-450 meters in the southeast of the region on galestro soils. The 2016 Poggio al Granchio Brunello di Montalcino is aromatically expressive of perfectly ripe cherry, sweet herbs, dried flowers, and stony earth. There is generous purity of fruit on the palate, with mineral-rich earth, and it had the most balanced and harmonious structure in the lineup on this tasting, with present but fine-grained tannin. I love this wine for its darker mineral edge in counterpoint with crunchy and ripe fruit. It is a super-pleasurable wine right out of the gate and will continue to be so over the next 20 or more years. 2025-2042. Audrey Frick, JebDunnuck .com

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio al Granchio is a dark and rich expression of earth and black fruits, laced with crushed stone minerality and hints of sour citrus. There are depths of silky textures here yet also a lifted and cooling feel to the expression, giving way to zesty wild berries, savory spice, mint and inner florals. It’s classically structured and showing only a glimpse of what’s to come after time in the cellar, leaving an impression of poise and purity. The Poggio al Granchio is a gorgeous expression of the vintage, hailing from the Southeast of Montalcino and refined entirely in large Slavonian oak. Tasted twice with consistent results.- Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

2015 Dal Forno Romano Amarone della Valpolicella

Monte Lodoletta

$389.89 (750ml) In Stock- Buy Now

96 WS / 96 JS

A rich red, with good tension and energy, displaying tightly meshed flavors of blackberry preserves, fig cake, espresso crema and singed sage coiled around a core of dense but fine tannins. Tea leaf, smoky earth and mineral notes chime on the long and chewy finish.-Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator

Such a profound nose of fresh and dried fruit with blackcurrants, dates and prunes, together with lighter notes of mild spice and pomegranate seeds. The fresher elements provide the drive on the full palate and, together with very fine, bright, fine-grained tannins, give a long, chewy yet fresh and pruney finish. Hugely concentrated, but the balance and poise is impeccable. There’s no denying the classic quality of this.-James Suckling

The Dal Forno family has been making wine since 1983. Located in Val D’Illasi, the estate consists of 65 acres of vines planted to traditional indigenous varieties of Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Oseleta and Croatina. The estate vineyards and farm are located where the slopes begin to rise toward the mountains and sit 1,000 feet above sea level. The loose, alluvial soils, meticulous pruning and scrupulous viticultural techniques ensure remarkable-quality grapes. The Dal Fornos use traditional methods to grow the finest fruit, and then employ modern techniques to produce the best wines — classic in expression and modern in purity. Dal Forno Romano is well-known for a number of superior wines that range from the region’s famous Valpolicella and Amarone to unique bottlings such as Vigne Seré, a passito dessert-style wine.
