There has been Merlot in Italy since at least 1855 (under the name “Bordo”), as the upper class vineyard owners planted the grapes of Bordeaux to keep up with the style of the French. Over time they found that the softness of Merlot also played well with the local grapes like Sangiovese or Corvina (ironically, “Il Corvo” is "blackbird" in Italian).

But it is down in Tuscany, in certain parts of the historical Chianti Classico region and out in the coastal area of Bolgheri, that Merlot really shines. Whether blended or standing alone, these wines showcase the power and elegance of the grape.
