Krug Clos du Mesnil is a rare and exceptional Champagne, showcasing the unique character of a single plot of Chardonnay, harvested in a single year. The 1.84 hectare vineyard, protected by walls since 1698, is nestled in the heart of Mesnil-sur-Oger, a renowned village for Chardonnay in the Champagne region. In 1971, the discovery of this walled plot led to the legendary creation of Krug Clos du Mesnil. The south-eastern orientation of the plot, along with the village's protection, has contributed to the consistently beautiful and unique character of the wines produced. In 1979, Krug Clos du Mesnil 1979 was created exclusively from the grapes of this exceptional plot and single year, defying the conventions of Champagne blending. Krug's Clos du Mesnil offers a Champagne of exceptional beauty and poise, telling a remarkable story of this plot's grapes, only on very special years.

"Krug’s Clos du Mesnil gives us Chardonnay grapes with a consistently distinctive and beautiful expression. The unique location of this tiny vineyard, protected by the houses, as well as the precision with which we harvest it at the optimal moment are what allow us to capture Krug Clos du Mesnil’s signature lace-like freshness and length on very special years." - Julie Cavil, Krug Cellar Master

This is a wine with staggering length and immense purity. It's as powerful as chardonnay can be, showcasing an incredible depth of pure fresh lemons, yellow grapefruit, honey and dried white and yellow flowers. The concentration and complexity of primary fruits are outstanding, and there are some more exotic flavors here too in the peach and green-mango spectrum. The texture is ultra-fine and creamy through the mid-palate, its majestic curves sweeping long around a sturdy mineral core. This is very silky and focused, offering gently creamy moments before twisting towards a composed, restricted and compressed chalk-like finish. It delivers an impression of chardonnay that captures incredible richness, fleshiness, persistence and power. Yet the acidity is staggering while being simultaneously perfectly balanced. Drink now but this will have a lot more to come after 2020. - James Suckling

Singly and emphatically the greatest Champagne release of recent years. Grand malic acidity of dizzyingly heightened proportions is swept up in an immense, all-consuming tidal wave of frothing, sea-salt minerality, crashing with such structure that any mortal wine would collapse breathless in its wake. Yet herein lies the triumph of 2002, the vintage that more than any other reverberates with looming structure, yet meets it commandingly with awe-inspiring fruit presence. This sets it with a life expectancy of a century, no less. - Tyson Stelzer, Decanter

Medium green-yellow, fine golden reflections, delicate, integrated mousse. A hint of fresh lime and almond cake, nuances of orange jam, fine ethereal nuances, some lemon balm, dark minerality, multi-faceted bouquet. Tight on the palate, biscuit is underpinned, full-bodied and elegant, fine fruity sweetness of ripe white pome fruit, lemony nuances, some candied kumquats, convincing freshness, salty notes, some herbal spice on the finish, has great length and secure aging potential, a wine of convincing quality Depth and character.-Peter Moser, Falstaff

Krug’s 2008 Clos du Mesnil, tasted from two bottles, is a very, very special Champagne. Soaring aromatics, fine, chiseled fruit and understated depth are the signatures of a Champagne that is immediately captivating. Bright, salivating acids run through a core of citrus fruit, lemon oil, slate, chalk, mint and white pepper. A touch of reduction and a superb, fine mousse move the 2008 into a realm that straddles Champagne and a distinctly Burgundian expression of Chardonnay. The 2008 is going to be expensive, and I am already hearing that allocations will be miniscule. For readers who can find it, the 2008 is an essential Clos du Mesnil that will take its place among the greatest vintages made here, specifically the 1979, 1988 and 1996. If anyone wants to organize a comparative tasting of the four, plus maybe the 2004, I’m game! The 2008 Clos du Mesnil is a magnificent Champagne to savor over the next several decades. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
