Today sees the release of four of our 2023 Bordeaux Wines of the Vintage!

A Pessac Leognan property that has been “firing on all cylinders” of late, Chateau Les Carmes Haut Brion is located right in Pessac (across from Haut Brion). The property changed hands in 2011 and has undergone extensive upgrades including a massive renovation of the winemaking facilities and an expansion of vineyard holdings. It has been farmed Organically since 2009 and has the highest proportion of Cabernet Franc on the Left Bank, at around 45% of plantings, with the rest 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot, set across two gravel, clay and sandy soil slopes. The wines are now better than ever! "Guillaume Pouthier and his team have once again crafted one of Bordeaux's most unique and characterful wines” - Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate

Yet again, Château Canon has made a brilliant wine. We always look forward to tasting both new and mature vintages, and the 2023 lived up to expectations, showing off wonderful dark fruit and perfect weight and balance, all carried off with the elegance of this vintage. Demand for Canon continues to grow, unsurprisingly! "2023 Canon is another brilliant wine from a property whose excellence can almost be taken for granted.” - William Kelley, The Wine Advocate

Another stunning wine from St-Émilion is the2023 Château Pavie-Macquin. We had the opportunity to taste this wine a few times during our trip out there, and each time was better than the last. We can highly recommend it!

One of the most highly sought after wines of Margaux, Rauzan-Ségla, is an esteemed 2nd Growth owned by the Chanel Group. It has been on an amazing run of form over the last two decades. Since new winemaker, Nicolas Audebert, took over the reins from John Kolasa in 2015, he has continued to raise the bar in terms of quality with the 2023 continuing that trend.

Also available is a compelling Pomerol from VCC's Guillaume Thienpont, Guillot Clauzel.

2023 Les Carmes Haut Brion (Pessac-Leognan)
GVWM Wine of the Vintage

98-99 JS / 97-99 WA / 96-98 WI / 97 DE / 95-97 JD / 96 JA / 94-96 VM

Guillaume Pouthier and his team have once again crafted one of Bordeaux's most unique and characterful wines. Revealing aromas of mulberries and raspberries mingled with notions of vine smoke, orange zest, rose petals and spices, the 2023 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and concentrated, with a powerful, vibrant and complete mid-palate, concluding with a long, ethereal and mouthwateringly saline finish. Sensual, suave and seamless, its beautifully refined tannins are, analytically, more abundant than even those of the 2022 vintage, yet they are so brilliantly integrated as to be near-imperceptible. This blend of 50% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot is crafted for longevity, though its refined structure will make it surprisingly approachable at an early age. It's maturing 70% in new oak barrels, 20% in 18-hectoliter foudres and 10% in amphorae. A creditable yield of 50 hectoliters per hectare represents a decided agronomic success in what was a challenging growing season. - Wine Advocate, Yohan Castaing

GVWM Wine of the Vintage

A blend of 71% Merlot and 29% Cabernet Franc, the 2023 Canon has a pH of 3.42 and it will age in barriques for 16-18 months, of which 50% are new. It is deep garnet-purple in color and sails out of the glass with bold notions of juicy blueberries, fresh plums, and Bing cherries, giving way to hints of black pepper, fragrant soil, and violets. The medium to full-bodied palate shimmers with energetic black and blue fruits, framed by super-satiny tannins and compelling tension, finishing long and fragrant. Absolutely ethereal! - Lisa Perotti-Brown, Wine Independent

2023 Rauzan Segla (Margaux)

GVWM Wine of the Vintage

96-98 VM / 97-98 JS / 96 DE / 95-97 WI / 94-96 WA / 93-95 JD

The 2023 Rauzan-Ségla is fabulous. Rich, dense and explosive, the 2023 soars out of the glass with captivating aromatics. Readers will find a vertical, deep Margaux endowed with tremendous character and nuance. All the elements are so well-balanced. Crushed rocks, plum, blood orange, spice and leather are some of the notes that explode into the finish. In 2023, the Grand Vin is distinctly red-fruited and vibrant. Rauzan-Ségla is one of the most memorable wines of the vintage. It was nothing short of stellar on the four occasions I tasted it. -- Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

The 2023 Pavie Macquin is deep garnet-purple in color. Wow! It prances out with a showy perfume of lilacs, iris bulb, star anise, sandalwood, and Sichuan pepper leading to a core of redcurrant jelly, wild blueberries, and black raspberries plus earthy suggestions of moss-covered tree bark and fallen leaves. The medium to full-bodied palate shimmers with energetic red and black berry layers, framed by firm fine-grained tannins and magic tension, finishing very long with lots of chalky and red berry sparks. This is electric. The pH this year is 3.40. - Lisa Perotti-Brown, Wine Independent
