We’re thrilled to announce the release of the final and perhaps most-anticipated 2023 First Growth to be released en primeur, a "Sensual, silky and exceptionally polished" Château Margaux. It is one of the original Premier Cru Classé properties of 1855, and one of the grandest, most imposing châteaux in the Médoc. Viticulture has been practiced on the estate for several centuries. Margaux was revitalised in 1978 after being bought by the Greek family of Mentzenopoulos, and is currently owned by the daughter Corinne. For more than two decades the wine making was done by the gifted Paul Pontallier, who passed away in 2016, and who is credited for making significant improvements to the wines. Winemaking is now overseen by Philippe Bascaules, who worked alongside Pontallier for 21 years, and the run of incredible wines has continued. The 2023 is no exception! Also available are the Pavillon Rouge and Pavillon Blanc.
Today sees the release of a wine that is on most people's wish list every year, 2023 Chateau Calon Ségur. Calon Ségur is the most northerly of all the Medoc Grand-Crus Classes and produces one of the very best and age-worthy wines on the Left Bank. "The 2023 Château Calon Ségur is absolutely brilliant and clearly in the top handful of wines in the vintage - it has more mid-palate depth, richness, and length than just about every other wine out there.” - Jeb Dunnuck
We are delighted to offer the En Primeur release from one of our favorite St. Julien estates, Château Gruaud Larose. The esteemed 2nd Growth consistently produces one of the best wines in the appellation and occasionally they make a wine that challenges the very best on the Left Bank. Between us we have been very fortunate to taste most of the great vintages dating back to the late 1800's (!) and the aging capability of the wine is simply mind boggling. Even in the off vintages, the wine can shine - the 1964 is a great example. The 1982 is simply one of the best wines we have encountered. The property clearly has some very special terroir.

2023 Margaux (Margaux)
GVMW Wine of the Vintage
99-100 JS / 97-100 VM / 96-100 JD / 97-99 WI / 98 DE /98 JA / 95-97 WA
The 2023 Château Margaux is clearly one of the greats in the vintage, and it actually reminds me a touch of the 1996, if not better. Revealing a deep purple hue, it has an incredible bouquet of cassis and blue fruits interwoven with classic Margaux floral, sandalwood, spice, and graphite aromatics. It's hard to find a wine in 2023 that has this much density and depth, with sweet tannins and so much charm. The blend is 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot, all of which will see 20 months in new barrels. Not enough can be said about the genius of Philippe Bascaules and the Mentzelopoulos family, who continue to produce sensational wine after sensational wine. - Jeb Dunnuck

Precise and confident texture to this wine, has higher levels of both Cabernets in 2023 than in 2022, having reached exceptional maturity, and personally I feel that have recaptured the heart and spirit of Calon. Skilfully made, love the violet peony savoury character, it's sappy and has liqourice root and squid ink salinity, along with tons of cassis and cigar box. The blend for this was built on Cabernet, and you can feel it. My favourite Calon since the 2020 vintage, hands down. 100% new oak, director Vincent Millet. - Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

2023 Gruaud Larose (Saint-Julien)
97 DE / 95 JA / 94-96 WI / 94-96 VM / 17+ JR
A complete knockout of a wine in 2023. Deep, vibrant purple in colour. Lots of milk chocolate, some exotic spices and black fruit touches on the nose, along with floral scents of roses and violets - smells gorgeous. Supple and filling, an immediate weight and texture on the palate, thick silk and ripe fruit, massy but then almost straight away quite clean and crisp. Forward and focussed, tannins RE supportive but so well integrated into the wine - almost a seamless expression - with plenty of underlying power. It’s delicious. Very drinkable, finessed and restrained, nothing overdone, no harshness. Everything feels in its place. Juicy and succulent cherry, blackcurrant and blueberry with high mouthwatering acidity. A great wine, I love it because it’s layered and lifted, you can feel the sculpting with muscles on show and it feels very ‘put together’. There’s lots of strict Cabernet, but this has a touch of plushness which you can't help but smile at. A top buy in 2023. 40% grand production, taken from 60% of the estate. 15% press wine. - Georgina Hindle, Decanter
