Domaine Huet, founded in 1928 by Victor Huet and his son Gaston, today has thirty hectares of Chenin planted on three key vineyards: Clos du Bourg, Le Mont, and Le Haut Lieu. From these 3 single vineyards come 3 different styles, starting with “Sec” for the dry wines. This is followed by "Demi-Sec", literally meaning "half dry," with an average of about 17 grams per liter of residual sugar. The next level is Moelleux" (literally meaning "full of marrow," and referring more to the textural quality than to the sweetness) which will have approximately 30 grams of residual sugar. The final elevated classification of "Première Trie" doesn’t automatically mean that these grapes have been harvested on the first passage as the name might suggest, but rather that they are selected on any one of the three separate visits to the vineyard when bunches affected either by botrytis or dried by wind and sun are selected, often grape by grape.

The estate was one of the leaders of biodynamic cultivation in French vineyards, and the results have proven Huet is an undisputed benchmark of collectible, age-worthy Chenin Blanc.

Despite its 125g/L of residual sugar, the 2022 Le Mont Premiere Trie Moelleux is balanced, fine and long. Yes, its sweetness fills the mouth and makes it blossom, but there's no suggestion of unctuousness or weight. It has a tranquility as if it has just finished a weekend on a retreat, calmly coating the palate with its curves. In 2022, its tender acidity makes for a gentle conclusion with a delicate floral fragrance. Nevertheless, the refined, chalky tension pulls this wine through, bringing line and length. - Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous Media

The 2022 Le Mont Moelleux is a medium-sweet, tender style that is just so welcoming and appealing. It is the quiet type that doesn't show off. It offers breadth without weight, which I always like about the Huet wines - they're like clouds of Chenin floating over your palate. A fine floral and fruity fragrance reminiscent of lilac, pear and pineapple lingers off the tranquil finish. While the acidity in 2022 is a little gentle, it still has enough tension to sweep up the wine and hold it all together. A little more length and line would elevate it further. (51g/L RS, in case you're interested). - Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous Media

The 2022 Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux is a supple, tender style. It's delicate on the palate while succulent and medium-sweet, which is quite a feat. You'll struggle to find many producers in the world who can achieve this balance. It has a fine, delicate fragrance of apple, pear and even a hint of celery. The finish is gentle, with a fine texture lightly coating the palate. A little shorter than I'd like ideally, but still super stuff. (47g/L RS) - Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous Media

Perfumed and juicy, with a concentration that builds. Round and silky, this shows a lot of delicious fruit and a lot of complexity, with sea salt–dusted apple and honeycomb flavors layered with green herbs and cardamom, which bring an appealing savory edge. There's a lot to like now, yet this is one for the cellar as well. Drink now through 2035. 500 cases made.–Kristen Bieler, Wine Spectator

A very expressive, rich and inviting wine, with an enticing mix of juicy lemon, yellow apple and honeysuckle flavors flecked with dried thyme, brioche and chamomile tea. Shows a lot of stuffing, with vivid acidity and chalky tannins providing a framework for the density, extending through the quinine-laced finish. Drink now through 2032. 900 cases made.–Kristen Bieler, Wine Spectator
