The House of Leclerc Briant was a pioneer of biodynamics in Champagne, with Bertrand Leclerc promoting the principles in the late 1950s and his son Pascal achieving full certifications. Today, the estate spans 14 hectares, primarily classified as Grand Cru and Premier Cru, and is fully certified organic and biodynamic, with all champagnes also labeled as vegan. Hervé Jestin, a biodynamic enologist, collaborates closely with the house, focusing on the relationship between humans and nature to enhance both vine cultivation and winemaking. Each vinification step is approached naturally, allowing the wines to express their unique personality after extended aging with minimal dosage.

"Drinking a glass of biodynamic champagne is like making a phone call to nature itself, without knowing who's going to pick up. Ocean waves in a glass" - Herve Jestin, Leclerc-Briant

Medium green yellow, silver reflections, fine, constant mousse. Attractive yellow tropical fruit, some mango and peach, floral touch, a hint of brioche and candied orange zest, nuances of kumquat. Full-bodied, fine white apple fruit nuances, finesse-rich structure, lime on the finish, a salty food companion, good development and certain ageing potential. (Base vintage 2019, Deg. 12/22). - Falstaff

Pouring a bright pale yellow hue, the NV Champagne Reserve Brut is from 2019, with 40% each Pinot Noir and Meunier and 20% Chardonnay. It opens to reveal notes of wet asphalt, ripe white peach, and fresh redcurrant. Medium-bodied and approachable, it has a rounded mid-palate, a chalky and pithy texture with a lively yet fine mousse, and a light note of brûléed grapefruit rind on the finish. It’s an attractive and balanced wine with a clean finish. Drink 2023-2030. Disgorged March of 2023. 4.5 grams per liter dosage. - Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck

Coming from the 2020 vintage and made from 93% Chardonnay, with 7% Pinot Noir vinified as red wine from the Côte des Bars, the pale salmon-colored NV Champagne Extra Brut Rosé is fresh and attractive, with a floral and stony perfume of crushed stones, rose petals, candied peach, and strawberry. Medium-bodied, it’s juicy and elegant on the palate and balanced with a lively, peppery mousse, with a clean finish. A very pretty wine, it’s approachable now or over the next 10 years. 2.8 grams per liter dosage. Disgorged June 2023. - Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck

One of a handful of single vineyard châteaux in Champagne, now being made by Leclerc-Briant (although they are not owners). Crisp, clean, touches of green apple on the nose but there is weight behind this and it opens to show plenty of quince, hazlenut, biscuit and flaky pastry character, not quite as far as brioche at this point although it will develop over the next few years. The first wine to be released under the new regime, with Hervé Jestin chef de cave, as for Leclerc-Briant (he was in fact already making wine here under the previous owners). Ageing in neutral oak casks, biodynamic viticulture. 2.5ha of vines, 12%abv. Tasted twice, loved it both times, powerful depth of flavour. Brut zero (2g/l dosage), Blanc de Blancs, 100% Grand Cru. - Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux
