In wine, location is everything. And some places just stand out above the rest. Temperance Hill is the coolest, and therefore, latest-ripening vineyard, and it is the highest vineyard producing fruit in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA.

Managed by Dai Crisp since 1999, this second-generation vineyard was first planted in 1981 by the Koo family on what is believed to be the remnants of an ancient volcano. With an elevation range of 660 to 860 feet, Temperance Hill is a cool site, providing excellent growing conditions for Pinot Noir.

Dai Crisp, one of the pioneers of organic grape growing in the Willamette Valley, took over management of Temperance Hill in 1999 and began farming it in accordance with USDA Organic Certification standards. The vineyard was Certified Organic in 2012 and is also Salmon Safe Certified. Dai uses mechanical cultivation rather than herbicides and usually does two jobs at once, like mowing while in-row cultivating, to increase the efficiency of fuel and tractor use. All the handwork is done by a 15-person crew, the core of which has been with Dai since 1999.

From a certified organic, high-quality site, the absolutely stunning 2021 Pinot Noir Temperance Hill Vineyard pours a deeper jeweled ruby with purple tinge. It will also certainly do well to decant if opening any time soon, but it quickly blows off to reveal a gorgeous spectrum of aromas including kirsch, lavender, clove, and forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, with a weightless feel and a velvety texture, it offers pillowy tannins and fresh balanced acidity. This exceptional and harmonious red is a fantastic counterpart to the Tualatin Hills Estate Vineyard bottling. Bravo. Drink 2025-2045.-Audrey Frick, JebDunnuck

Sheer elegance from the Lavinea bottling of the Eola-Amity grand cru site, Temperance Hill. Lavinea's block was planted in 2001 and, like the rest of the site, is managed by the Willamette Valley sage, Dai Crisp. Haunting aromatics of sous bois, evergreen bough and spicy blood orange zest. There is a potpourri of smoky red florals and a touch of gunflint. The palate is silken; concentrated red berry flavoured alight the fore palate, followed by structured elements of savoury herbs, chicory root, and hints of wild anise. The savoury depths go on as long as the finish. While this wine is captivating, it will only improve over the next 7 to 12 years.-Clive Pursehouse, Decanter

12.7% alc., 100 cases, $52. Sourced from fruit planted in 1994. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. A complex woodsy perfume with aromas of tilled earth, Herbs de Provence, cherry, and rose petal. Striking purity of well-spiced black cherry fruit in a mid-weight style with exquisite balance. Flavors of spice and peppercorns add interest. Giving initially but improves in the glass over time. A complete wine with an exceptionally long and gratifying finish. Score: 96. Rusty Gaffney MD, PinotFile

Limpid violet. Vibrant red and blue fruit, floral oil, cola and exotic spice qualities on the intensely perfumed nose. Sweet and fleshy on the palate, offering concentrated raspberry, cherry, floral pastille and exotic spice flavors that tighten up and turn livelier as the wine opens up. Shows superb clarity and minerally lift and cut on an extremely long, focused finish shaped by smooth, well-judged tannins.-- Josh Raynolds, Vinous Media

Tasting note: There are hints of green tea adding breadth to the aromas of cool red currant, floral, briar and spice wisps. Here too there is good volume to the delicious, vibrant and appealingly textured middle weight flavors where the mouthfeel also benefits from the relatively fine-grained, if dense, tannins on the powerful, serious, compact and borderline rustic finale. This firmly austere effort is a 'buy and forget you own it' wine for at least 7 to 8 years and 10 would be better. In sum, this is very promising but a bit grumpy at present. Outstanding. –Allen Meadows, Burghound
