“I’m betting that LAVINEA will, in short order, be widely considered among Oregon’s elite producers.” - Josh Raynolds, Vinous Media

I went to a tasting not long ago and there were a lot of great wines to experience there. Wines from the old world and new, and so many surprises to experience!

I came across a winery that was new to me and tasted across their entire lineup. All the wines were fantastic, but for whatever reason that day the Temperance Hill Pinot was the one that grabbed my attention. It is one of the truly special sites in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA of the Willamette Valley. And in the hands of talented winemaker Isabelle Meunier, the 2021 is a magnificent bottle.

A native of Quebec, Isabelle studied winemaking and viticulture at the University of Dijon and in New Zealand at Lincoln University before cutting her winemaking teeth in Burgundy, under the watch of fellow French-Canadian Pascal Marchand at Domaine de la Vougeraie, and at New Zealand’s Felton Road, with Blair Walter. Marchand recommended her to Dominique Lafon to oversee winemaking at his then-new Oregon consulting project, Evening Land, in 2007. Isabelle quickly became one of Oregon’s most acclaimed winemakers.

From a certified organic, high-quality site, the absolutely stunning 2021 Pinot Noir Temperance Hill Vineyard pours a deeper jeweled ruby with purple tinge. It will also certainly do well to decant if opening any time soon, but it quickly blows off to reveal a gorgeous spectrum of aromas including kirsch, lavender, clove, and forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, with a weightless feel and a velvety texture, it offers pillowy tannins and fresh balanced acidity. This exceptional and harmonious red is a fantastic counterpart to the Tualatin Hills Estate Vineyard bottling. Bravo. Drink 2025-2045.-Audrey Frick, JebDunnuck

Sheer elegance from the Lavinea bottling of the Eola-Amity grand cru site, Temperance Hill. Lavinea's block was planted in 2001 and, like the rest of the site, is managed by the Willamette Valley sage, Dai Crisp. Haunting aromatics of sous bois, evergreen bough and spicy blood orange zest. There is a potpourri of smoky red florals and a touch of gunflint. The palate is silken; concentrated red berry flavoured alight the fore palate, followed by structured elements of savoury herbs, chicory root, and hints of wild anise. The savoury depths go on as long as the finish. While this wine is captivating, it will only improve over the next 7 to 12 years.-Clive Pursehouse, Decanter
