Dom Thierry Ruinart, a Benedictine monk, lived from 1657-1709 and was introduced to the concept of champagne during his time in Paris. In 1729, Nicolas Ruinart founded Maison Ruinart, the world's first champagne-producing company. The acquisition of ancient crayères in the mid-18th century allowed Ruinart to store its bottles underground in Reims. The Ruinart family has led the House for over two centuries, with each generation contributing to its legacy. Chardonnay is the signature grape variety of Ruinart, known for its elegance and freshness, and has been a key component in the Maison's cuvées since 1947. Chardonnay, a delicate grape variety, requires special care and thrives on chalk soils, particularly in Taissy and Sillery, the oldest known Grands Crus of chardonnay. Ruinart exclusively selects Grand Cru chardonnays from the finest harvests for its Dom Ruinart vintages, showcasing the grape's exquisite qualities.
