As you know, I do love Nebbiolo! And while I will take a Barolo whenever it’s offered, I feel that Barbaresco is often overlooked. The soils are different, that is the main distinction between the two places, but Barbaresco is often a fantastic value for an equally delicious wine. The wines are usually more approachable sooner, but they have grace and elegance and can really age for decades. These wines from Ca’ del Baio (House of the Bay, or House of the Brown Horse) are lovely and really overdeliver for the money.

Ca' del Baio excels with forward, open-knit Barbarescos that offer notable charm. The Grasso family sources from top sites in Treiso and Barbaresco. The wines spend about a month on the skins. In recent years, the Grassos have begun to experiment with a small amount (10%) of stems in the vineyard designates. Time in barrel is 22-25 months (a bit less for the Autinbej), all in cask, except for the Pora and Riserva Viti Vecchie Vallegrande, which are aged in tonneaux because of the smaller volumes of those wines. The Grassos are one of the historic vigneron families in Piedmont. It’s great to see them doing so well with the refined wines they make today.” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

2021 Ca' del Baio Barbaresco Asili

$39.89 (750ml) In Stock – Buy Now

96 JS / 95 VM

Strawberries, watermelon, pomegranate, fresh violets and a lot of orange peel. Then the full-bodied palate shows pinot-like elegance, almost silky tannins and great concentration of fruit, with rhubarb notes, fierce tannins that are elegant and ripe, refreshing acidity and a long, precise, polished aftertaste. Drink or hold.—James Suckling

The 2021 Barbaresco Asili shows all the pedigree of this great site. Crushed flowers, bright red-toned fruit, mint, cinnamon and rose petals soar from the glass. Medium in body yet wonderfully deep, the Asili has so much to offer. What a pretty and expressive wine it is. Give it a few years in bottle.-Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

2021 Ca' del Baio Barbaresco Vallegrande

$34.89 (750ml) In Stock – Buy Now

95 JS / 93 VM

Bright cherry fruit expression, velvety and full-bodied with great balance. It has a firm structure and is well packed with fruit. Elegant wine with great refinement and a long licorice and slightly chocolatey aftertaste. Drink or hold.—James Suckling

The 2021 Barbaresco Vallegrande is a complex, dynamic wine. Spice and floral inflections fill out the layers, giving this Barbaresco notable amplitude. Macerated dark cherry, leather, tobacco, dried flowers and incense develop later, adding layers of nuance. There's certainly plenty to like, starting with the wine's substance and overall palate presence-Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

2021 Ca' del Baio Barbaresco Autinbej

$26.89 (750ml) In Stock – Buy Now

94 JS / 91 VM

Notes of potpourri, cinnamon, sweet violets, complex layered fruit, crisp acidity and focused cherry pit minerality. Velvety, slightly dusty tannins with licorice in the finish. Essentially ready to drink, but will improve with aging..—James Suckling

The 2021 Barbaresco Autinbej is bright, vibrant and effusive. A blend of mostly Marcarini with some fruit from Ferrere and Montersino, the Autinbej offers up scents of pipe tobacco, cedar, mint, dried flowers and licorice, all in a deceptively mid-weight style that is quite appealing. There's lovely energy and focus here. The 2021 opens beautifully with a bit of air-Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
