The Louis Roederer Collection range, which is numbered by harvest, is a blend of three components: a perpetual reserve done in the classic non-malo Roederer style, reserve wines in oak with a touch of malo, and a base vintage. We've had incredible success with the wines starting with the 97-point 242, and as the releases have evolved we've found the quality in the bottle (and halves and magnums!) to be outstanding with great QPR. Roederer releases each collection iteration in half bottles first, followed by bottles, then magnums based on how the wine ages in each format for optimal drinking.

We just received the 245 in half bottles based on the 2020 vintage, as well as the "superior" 244 now in 750ml bottles, based on 2019.

""It was a desire for freedom, to take the quality of our multi-vintage blends to an even higher level, that prompted us to take a new course of action and to create Collection. Collection is a champagne that is vibrant and contemporary!

The Champagne region has been impacted by climate change over the past 30 years, presenting an opportunity for us to harvest riper grapes in earlier harvests and produce vintage champagne more frequently. This new context has broadened the scope of our winemaking, offering possibilities in terms of typicity and characteristics of our wines. Collection symbolizes the freedom of the Louis Roederer style, reflecting our constant pursuit of quality and sustainable growing practices in the heart of the Champagne terroirs. We carefully redefined all plots for Collection, focusing on retaining only those with strong identities rooted in the "Cœur de Terroir" to ensure the best fruit vintage after vintage." - Louis Roederer

The year 2020 followed a similar trajectory to that of 2019 with a mild and rainy winter followed by a dry summer with several heatwaves which, although less extremes than in 2019, still had an impact on the vine. Fortunately, the weather was rather dull and a bit wet in June which gave us a welcome humid interlude between two dry spells. Despite our impressions of relentless heat and sunshine, the temperatures and sunshine levels over the 2020 harvest period were actually relatively normal. These continental conditions, but with “normal” annual averages, enabled the production of mature and well balanced wines!

The harvests too place between 22 August and 11 September 2020.

Vinepair Best Champagnes of 2023

Even though 2019 follows the modern trend for warm, ripe vintages, harvesting was a couple of weeks later than in 2018, translating into superior phenolic presence. An aromatic bouquet of flowery-acacia hints at the higher Meunier. The structure is firmer than the 2018 base; the pear-like fruit is streaked with dazzling acidity. With a bit of coaxing, the ubiquitous tangerine aroma (citrus with an added saline condiment) emerges with time in the glass (as the perpetual reserve makes itself known). A faint umami savouriness haunts the finish, an aroma that appears to be the signature of early-release 2019-based champagnes. This edition will take a year or so in bottle to relax, eschew the phenolic bitterness of recent disgorgement, and build fruit. Statistics: 41% Chardonnay, 26% Meunier, and 33% Pinot Noir. 54% 2019 vintage (5% vinified in oak), 36% Perpetual Reserve (2012-2018), and 10% Reserve wines (2009-2018, aged in oak). Disgorged in spring 2023 with a dosage of 7g/l. Drink from 2025-2032. Tasted: January 2024. - Steven Prichard for Jasper Morris' Inside Burgundy
