It’s fall, which gets me thinking about the cool fogs enveloping the vineyards of the Langhe (that's a webcam image of the Langhe from today). These nebbia give their name to the noble grape of Piedmont: Nebbiolo. It’s a thin-skinned grape, much like Pinot Noir, or even Nerello Mascalese from Mt. Etna, and its high acidity gives it long life and great structure. I love the earthy, floral and wet leaves characteristics. And the fact that Piedmont is home to so many world class restaurants, and world class foods.

Piedmont is home to the famous white truffle (and the black one too!), hazelnuts, wild boar, risotto, polenta and gnocchi, Piemontese beef, beloved pasta like Agnolotti del Plin, a sizzling Bagna Cauda, so many wonderful cheeses, and I highly recommend you try Vitello Tonnato (veal roast with a tuna sauce, it is really good!).

With so many wonderful foods, the wines of Piedmont need to complement everything and the table, and while a lovely Barbera, Dolcetto, Gavi, Arneis, or even an elegant Barbaresco are always welcome, there’s nothing quite like an epic Barolo for a grand meal in the cooler months. Though one could argue you could have all those wines and make it a party!

#83 James Suckling's Top 100 Italian 2023

The compelling 2019 Barolo Bric del Fiasc from Paolo Scavino is drop-dead gorgeous. Opening with heady scents of Alpine herb, iris, dark spice and perfumed berry, it showcases the magnificent site, the fantastic vintage and the generational experience of the Scavino family. Stunningly delicious and radiant, it delivers ripe red cherry, raspberry compote, blood orange and licorice set against firm, fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity. Notes of tobacco and almond linger on the finish. Drink 2029–2059. –Kerin O’Keefe

Tasting Giuseppe Mascarello’s magnificent 2019 Monprivato stopped me in my tracks with its impeccable class, seemingly infinite energy and great balance between fruit, depth and finesse. Both fragrant and utterly delicious, it captivates with mesmerizing aromas of new leather, iris, spice and citrus while the full-bodied, racy palate boasts crunchy red cherry, juicy strawberry, black tea, and white pepper before closing on notes of star anise and salty mineral. An absolute stunner, this has it all. Drink 2031–2049. Abv: 14.5% Kerin O’Keefe

100 JS

#1 JS Top 100 Italian Wines of 2023

This is a phenomenal Barolo from a benchmark vintage. It’s so powerful and structured with toned and muscular tannins that run the length of the wine. Classic structure. Full-bodied but tight and intense. Flavors of forest floor, fresh mushroom, truffle, and cedar. Dried flowers, too. It goes on for minutes. This needs at least eight years to soften. Leave in the cellar! One of the greatest Cannubis ever. From the original parcel of the vineyard. Aged five years in cask and two years in bottle. Try after 2030.

This is the second 100-point Vigna Le Rocche, following the 2015. What the former had in intensity of fruit and transparency, this has in structure and power. The purity of fruit is sensational in this young Barolo, offering blackberries, black truffle and iron. Rust too. This is so tannic and powerful with incredible structure. This may be the most structured Barolo from Bruno Giacosa I have ever tasted as a young wine. Speechless. Full-bodied and so intense, yet it remains fresh and agile. Traditional in every sense of the word, but this is clear and clean. A classic in the making. It will be in the market January 2022. Leave this for at least six to eight years. Try in 2027.—James Suckling
