Alter Ego is one of Bordeaux's most prized second wines, from biodynamically farmed Château Palmer in Margaux. It was launched with the 1998 vintage, driven by the idea of producing another facet to the estate. Spontaneous, round, generous, and silky, this "other wine" is both intense and light, rich and delicate. It has the elegance and grain de tanin of the first wine. Throughout its creation, Alter Ego is led by the same high standards that govern the composition of Château Palmer's grand vin.
One of the best rules to follow, especially in Bordeaux, is to buy second wines from the best properties in great vintages. Alter Ego, like Palmer, is elegant and refined, and has great ageing potential. We are always blown away by the quality of Alter Ego when we taste it - it is a serious, age-worthy wine that will shine on the dinner table in years to come. It isn't so much a second wine as an alternative expression of Palmer, blended from separate parcels of vines.

The 2020 Alter Ego is phenomenal. Bright acids and lifted floral top notes give the Alter Ego terrific brilliance. The combination of the growing season and a move towards foudres for the second year of élevage yields an Alter Ego that is decidedly linear in construction. The 2020 is going to need a number of years to come around. It's a gorgeous wine, but readers will have to get used to a style that is quite different from the more exuberant wines of the past. The 2020 Alter Ego de Palmer has turned out beautifully, bursting with aromas of violets and rose petals mingled with notions of sweet dark berries and baking chocolate. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and seamless, it's vibrant and perfumed, with a bright core of fruit, powdery tannins and a long, expansive finish. The 2019 Alter Ego de Palmer has a classically styled bouquet featuring a mélange of red and black fruit, briar, hints of cedar, and a touch of black tea, all showing lovely delineation. The palate is fresh and vibrant, displaying a touch of sour cherry on the granular-textured opening. There is something very "old school" about this Alter Ego in contrast to the 2018.
