We had the chance to taste these fantastic bottles the other day. This estate really captures the idea of Burgundy in the south of Tuscany. Most of their bottles are made with Sangiovese, in a way that reflects either the specific ‘crus’- Melo “The Wine of the Ceasars”, and the epic Anfiteatro - or the beguiling Petruccino and the young vine Villagio. The wine that really jumped out in our glasses was the Guardiavigna (loosely translates as “watching the vineyard”) which is Cabernet Franc. Totally unexpected and stunning. All the wines were fantastic, but the top three cru wines are truly exceptional and age-worthy. I’d drink any one of these again!

“We work the fields as they did 2,000 years ago, but in the winery we’re 200 years ahead,” Pasquale Forte

In a historical Tuscan village, a farmer-engineer runs an agricultural company that covers 500 hectares (27 of which are vineyards, 16 hectares of which are in production), five million square metres in the Val d'Orcia (a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004), on the Sienese hills. His name is Pasquale Forte and he defines himself as an "orchestra conductor." His "musicians" produce above all great wines, and take care of the vineyards, the olive groves, the botanical garden, the breeding of Cinta Senese pigs (from which they obtain excellent cold cuts), the flock of sheep, the Chianina cows, the farmyard animals – including chickens, hens, guinea fowl and rabbits – and even the wheat fields surrounding the iconic Vitaleta Chapel.

It all began in the mid-1990s when the engineer visited the Castiglione d'Orcia area and fell madly in love with it. In 1997 he decided to set up the farm that bears his name, discovering on the land a place with a centuries-old history: the abandoned Podere Petrucci. It would become the place he chose to restore the Valdorcian agricultural and wine-growing tradition. From this encounter a new and ancient entity was born, poised to inherit the commitment of generations of farmers refined by a wealth of contemporary experience.

Massive concentration and body, with lovely, smooth tannins supporting concentrated, dense layers of espresso, mint, prune, forest fruit jam and capsicum. A huge, gorgeous mouthful.-Decanter World Wine Awards

The biodynamic and organic 2016 Guardiavigna is recognized by its elegant black label. The wine is based on Cabernet Franc, although past vintages had varying percentages of Merlot and Petit Verdot in the blend. The wine shows a very focused and linear quality with black fruit, pencil shaving and black olive. This is a generous, full-bodied expression from Tuscany that hits all the high marks.-Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

2015 Podere Forte Petrucci Anfiteatro

$219.89 (750ml) 3 – 7 days: Call/Email to Order

97 DE / 96 FS / 93 WA

Crystalline black cherry fruit on the nose with lively red apples, plums and cinnamon overtones framed by wild herbs and blood orange nuances. Very precise and focused palate with robust tannins. -Decanter World Wine Awards

Shimmering ruby colour with a garnet sheen. Appealing nose with notes of wild raspberry and blackberry, some coriander seed in the background. Bold, tightly-knit tannin on the palate, embedded in a mellow texture. Earthy, salty notes on the finish.-Falstaff

2015 Podere Forte Petrucci Melo

$219.89 (750ml) 3 – 7 days: Call/Email to Order

95 FS / 95 FB / 94 WA / 91 VM / 91 DE

Shimmering ruby with garnet reflexes. Revealing nose with lush fruit of dark cherry and damson, a touch of tobacco in the background. Plentiful, finely, meshed, very well-placed tannin, bedded in mellow texture, delicious liquorice on the finish.-Falstaff

The Podere Forte 2015 Orcia Petrucci Melo gives us a nice look back into time. Drinking beautifully right now, this aged Sangiovese has only just started to show tertiary notes of tar and licorice. Otherwise, the fruit is intact and you get plum, dried cherry and blackcurrant. The tannins are integrated into the wine's medium-weight texture, and the finish is quite open and accessible. The secret here is the high-elevation vineyard (at 526 meters above sea level) and its unique mix of limestone soils and clay. Both these factors help underline freshness. Only 2,644 bottles exist. Nice job.- Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

2020 Podere Forte Petruccino

$69.89 (750ml) 3 – 7 days: Call/Email to Order

93 VM / 93 FS / 93 FB / 90 WA / 90 JS / 16.5 JR

The 2020 Petruccino is impossible to ignore—complex, with a brooding bouquet of crushed rocks giving way to dried black cherries, violet and lavender-tinged florals. This is seductive and elegant, with polished red fruits and sweet spices that swirl above a core of sour orange and zesty acidity. Red plums and hints of clove linger as the 2020 finishes gently tannic yet fresh, inviting the taster back to the glass.-Eric Guido, Vinous Media

Medium ruby red with a brightening edge. On the nose, fine aromas of sour cherry and wild strawberry are underpinned with spiced aromas of black pepper and dark chocolate. On the palate it's dense and juicy, undoubtedly fruit-driven with a good balance between acidity and tannin. .-Falstaff

2021 Podere Forte Villagio Rocca d’Orcia

$39.89 (750ml) 3 – 7 days: Call/Email to Order

91 WA / 91 JS / 90 VM / 90 FB / 16 JR

The Podere Forte 2021 Orcia Rocca d'Orcia Villaggio (made with certified organic and biodynamic Sangiovese) has a bright core of cherry fruit and wild berry that feels fresh and intact. It offers crisp aromas of tart fruit, and the bouquet is void of any over-ripeness or heaviness. In fact, this bottle has a fun and approachable personality, making it perfect for a simple dinner of pork chops and roasted potatoes.-Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Aromas of plums, cherries and red berries follow through to a medium-bodied palate with bright red-berry flavors and lightly firm tannins. Good acidity keeps it clean and fresh. Sangiovese. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink now.-James Suckling
